We engaged Jack Li to help us plan for a 4-day trip to Huangshan, including Mount Huangshan and a couple of ancient villages namely Hongcun and Xidi villages. I also requested for a tour guide that is bilingual (Chinese + English).
Jack Li did a very good itinerary planning for us including local transportation where needed and booking of HSR tickets in advanced.
The tour guide Jessica was super helpful, knowledgeable and just plain awesome. She was always waiting for us, at the train station, at the hotels, checking in and checking out for us, buying tickets to all the local attractions and sharing with us the historical background of the places we visited especially in the ancient villages Hongcun where the movie Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon was filmed, and Xidi. Mount Huangshan was very enjoyable with her guiding us and sharing with us the spots we need to look out for to take nice pictures.
Jessica was also able to recommend good restaurants and smaller eating places for us to try out. She was very professional and would perform her tasks end-to-end. She made our vacation at Huangshan very enjoyable, entertaining and worry free. We were most appreciative.
Thank you Jack and Jessica!!

Amazing and enjoyable private 21 days tour of China starting from Huangshan and finishing off in Shangri-la. Tour was planned and organised by Leo Li from China Discovery, all queries and requests were very promptly dealt with by Leo, very impressed by his service. Our tour took us from Huangshan, HongCun and Xidi villages, Longsheng rice terraces, Yangshuo/Guilin, Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang, Yuangyang rice terraces, Lijiang and Shangri-la. All transport and accomodation details were taken care off. Tour guides and drivers were all excellent, they were all very service orientated and professional, caring too! Will not hesitate to use them again! We are already planning for our next March/April 2025 trip to the Guizhou province with China Discovery.

Our travel consultant Wing Zeng was with us right from the beginning to put together our customized private small group travel itinerary, travel details and thru out the whole trip while we were in China and HK (China). We were able to communicate via emails and phone calls. Wing is always prompt, patient and detail in helping us with any details or issues.
The whole trip went just as planned and smoothly and we got to see and hike the beautiful Huangshan and Zhangjiajie mountains!! The scenery of both mountains are just out of this world! All local guides and drivers at each location are knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating ! Customized small private group tour is so great and flexible that my wife and I had a really great time visiting China and HK (China).

- Our contact in China Discovery (CD) was Leo Li. He replied all our e-mail and questions very promptly and patiently. Both Yu the Shanghai guide and Anna the Huangshan one were ok and had an adequate command of English.
- We were taken to the Shanghai Museum on People's Square but most of its treasures had already moved to the new building across the river.
- During our free time in Zhujiajiao water town, we visited the Garden of Inseparable Hearts which was next to Kezhi Garden. I believe both are lovely and should be recommended as an option by the guide/CD.
- A night up in Huangshan is advisable, as weather on our 1st day wasn't clear enough to see and enjoy the scenery while it cleared up for a while during the next day, affording some great pics.
- Similarly, to see more of Hongcun, or enjoy its night lights, I would recommend staying a night in the ancient village proper, rather than outside it. Otherwise, I felt that the 3-4 hours in Xidi and Hongcun combined was rather tight/rushed for us.
- Hotels and their breakfast were satisfactory but be prepared for compact rooms up in Huangshan.
- Very good and smooth trip overall (although we missed our train back to Shanghai due to a misunderstanding on the platform and had to buy new tickets for a later train). Planning our next trip now with CD.

The local guides and drivers are very friendly and helpful; they are all top-notch tour experts. As a native of their regions, they are very knowledgeable in local as well as all Chinese history and culture. Their English discussions are clear, concise, and comprehensive on local traditions, customs, and landmarks. Their restaurant recommendations on local cuisines are delicious. We feel very lucky to have such a delightfully accommodating team!
The hotels were impressive, and the location is perfect.

My wife and I reached out to China Discovery with a list of places we wanted to go to and how long we would be there and were quickly provided a detailed itinerary that met our needs. This included all of the tour guides, transfers, hotels, high speed trains, flights, and anything else that was needed. We worked with Wonder Wang and he was excellent. He was very attentive to all of our requests and responded immediately to any emails we sent. During our tour we made one change to a train and he took care of it immediately. Top notch service, 5 stars!
The visit itself was amazing. All of the stops we did were wonderful. Just some of the highlights included the Yellow Mountains, the Li River, The Great Wall, Longji Rice Terraces, and walking the wall in Xi'an. Our guides were great, we were always taken care of, and were made comfortable throughout. Highly recommend this company.

I travelled with friends - all of us active, healthy seniors. The core of our trip was the Silk Route (Xinjiang's Kashgar, Urumqi, Dunhuang, Xining) with extensions to Chengdu, Yellow Mountain, Hangchow, and Shanghai. Tracy of China Discovery managed our entire trip. She helped us with all the details in the months we took to plan this trip and managed questions along the way as we travelled. She was communicative, thorough, friendly, patient and responsive as she learned about our preferences.
Our arrivals and departures at airports, bullet trains and hotels were smooth. Our guides were excellent and were fluent English speakers. Their pride and love for their cities were clear and I learned a lot from them. The hotels chosen by China Discovery were very good and in areas that were extremely convenient. I should mention there were two staff changes in the months that we took to plan this trip but the transition to each professional was smooth.
I would certainly look up China Discovery (and Tracy) when I take another trip to China!

We just came back from amazing 3 weeks in China. Usually I plan all our trip myself, occasionally purchasing tours in some locations, but it was our first trip to China, we do not speak the language, so I decided to explore options to hire tour guides. We started with booking our Yangtze river cruise when I was contacted by Phoebe from China Discovery. She was very professional, details oriented, patient as we changed our dates and requests several times. She provided all details and answered all our questions immediately. We decided to book other tours with her as Phoebe seems like know what we are looking for and need. She customized the tours offered on their official website, adding some sights and activities we wanted.
Before the trip she kept reminding about some to do stuff for the trip.
Eventually, I planned our entire China itinerary, we were had tours with different guides in Beijing and Xian (I booked them before starting to work with Phoebe), we used China Discovery in Zhangjiajie N.P., Chengdu, Chongqing, 4d/3n Yangtze river cruise, Yichang and Huangshan, and we were independent in Shanghai. China Discovery also booked all our internal flights and train tickets, hotels, and upgraded us to business class for one flight with no additional cost. Navigating some parts of the country, for example Zhangjiajie N.P., is difficult without knowledge of Mandarin. Even in Beijing and Shanghai, very few people speaks English, therefore having a knowledgeable local guid is a must specially if you visit a country for the first time,
All our guides (Tim, Jason, David, Nancy and Jessica (June)) spoke good to great English. They made sure we are comfortable, had plenty of water, their recommendations for food was very good. They adjusted our schedule as needed.
The choice of hotels was very good. And, of course, the program was very good tailored. I suggest to install WeChat, it is the best communication tool with your guides to setup meeting points, and report the problem to main office if any and make last minute adjustments if necessary.
I highly recommend China Discovery as your tour agency in China. We certainly planning to come and discover different part of this great country and will hire China Discovery again as our travel operator.

We had just over two weeks arranged by China Discovery visiting Shanghai, Huangshan, Xi’an and Beijing. The tour was very well planned with a good balance of seeing sights and chill out days. In Shanghai we had a city tour and visited Disney. On the city tour the guide was really flexible adjusting the tour to our needs as we went, not only did we see what was on the tour but we also did the Shanghai tower which was amazing. The boat trip on the river was amazing in the evening with perfect timing where we got sunset and the lights on the river. For Disney it was a driver only day, the driver pickup and arrangements were spot on.
We took the train from Shanghai to Huangshan, we had some concerns over luggage as we weren’t sure about the size of suitcases being allowed on the train. Jack, our tour concierge advised us and sorted out the tickets so it was super smooth. On arrival at Huangshan we were met off the train, there were a lot of people yet the tour guide found us with ease, it was all very smooth. In Huangshan we went up the Yellow Mountains and visited two local historic cities Xidi and Hongcun. The tour guide on this leg of the trip was really great, he was spot on with the timing to see the sunrise on the mountain too which was an amazing sight. Our plane from Huangshan to Xi’an was delayed by nearly 4 hours which was out of the hands of the tour company, the tour guide went out of his way to make sure we were not left stranded by the delay by taking us to a nearby hotel to relax in the lobby to break the time up and advised us on a local restaurant to have some amazing food.
We arrived into Xi’an at 3:30am, a lot later than 23:15 and the driver was there waiting for us, no delay and straight to the hotel. The following day the tour guide in Xi’an adjusted the day to make sure we could see the Terracotta warriors whilst at the same time not being too tired which was really nice of him. In Xi’an the tour guide continued to be like all the other guides, excellent with great English, local knowledge and doing his best to make sure we had a great time. We changed plans to be able to ride on the city wall which was amazing.
We took the train from Xi’an to Beijing, again very smooth and the pick up to the hotel was spot on. The guide in Beijing really went above and beyond to the extent that on the last day he helped us plan a great day at the temple of heaven and a brilliant local show. The spot that China Discovery took us to for the Great Wall was excellent too.
All in all, a seamless and fantastic trip. The guides spoke great English, they adjusted to our needs, the hotels booked were great and we left China really happy with our trip.

I spent the night at a nice hotel at the top of the mountain and next morning we went for a new trecking and after that he took me to a very nice little village called Hongcun where he nicely invited me to a tea tasting. After that his driver and him accompanied me back to the train station with enough time to catch my train back to Hangzhou.
Johnson was very kind and very knowledgeable about the yellow mountain in general and about chinese history and culture. His english was perfect.

Hired 3D2N Huangshan private tour with my family of 4 adults. Tracy was very skilled in planning the itinerary. It was a good amount of activities and pace for the short span of time. We are generally quite active and fast paced, so by the end of the tour, we were beat but fulfilled. John was our tour guide, he is a local in Huangshan, has a good amount of knowledge and experience of the area, and we could feel he was genuinely caring for us throughout the whole tour. He is skilled in English, and he brought us to avoid crowds and loud noises, unlike other tour groups that we saw. There was only a small hiccup that we were not informed to bring backpacks, as we had to walk 1 hour over the hilly mountains while lugging our luggage (the other option was to hire porters to carry our luggage to the hotel for us, for around RMB100 per bag). I think a half day hike around the Huangshan mountain area (be prepared to have sore legs as there is a lot of walking) is sufficient. The town (esp XiDi & HongCun) was beautiful and we would preferred have spent more time there.

We (my husband and I) wanted to experience the yellow mountains in Winter and booked a 4 day tour by China Discovery. Everything (train, tour, hotel, entrances) was well organized and convenient for us so that we could enjoy our time in Huangshan, the yellow mountains and the beautiful ancient village Hongchun.
We were able to experience the old street of Huangshan, breathtaking scenery in the yellow mountains, a relaxing time in the hot springs and tea testing in Hongchun.
Our guide Louise was lovely, very experienced and also flexible so that we did some additional hiking because we are quite fit. We felt that China Discovery is very customer-oriented so that they will find the right activities for every guest / group and be there if you need advice or recommendations but in a totally discrete way so that you feel comfortable and can also enjoy the time with your company. What's more is that Louise told us a lot about the history, culture and nature and we really enjoyed the conversations, also because her English was very good.
Usually we travel on our own but as non-Chinese speaking foreigners it was much more convenient and I don't think our vacation would have been as complete without an expert who knows so much about the Chinese Culture and the country.
From our experience with China Discovery we would say that the quality of China Discovery is totally worth the price, especially if you prefer not being the typical tourist but instead experiencing the spots locals know.

Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is no doubt one of the most beautiful mountains in China. However, for senior travelers, walking up and down the countless stone steps was quite challenging. It was a good arrangement for staying three days and two nights on the mountain, and the Huangshan Xihai Hotel was great. We then visited three remarkable ancient villages that are the best examples of ancient Huizhou-style architecture. The famous Oscar-winner film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was filmed there. The hotel Crown Plaza Huangshan Yucheng was great. The morning walk along the Xin"anjiang River by the hotel was so refreshing.
We then finished the rest of the tour from Hangzhou to Shanghai in four days which was quite rushing. We should have allowed for more time.

After researching and reviewing a number of tour companies on the web, we chose China Discovery for a 15 day custom trip to China from mid-June to early July of 2019. This is the China Discovery stationed in Chengdu, China and associated with Chengdu Bamboo International Tours Company. I was nervous about going with a company located in China that I only communicated with through email and that I had never heard of before, but their reviews on Trip Advisor were so strong and the tour agent that worked with me, Wendy Dan, was so responsive and professional that I decided to take a (potentially really big) gamble and sign up with them. The price for the tour was also very reasonable, especially since this was a completely custom tour in which my family of four would visit specific places in Shandong, where most tourists do not go, including a small village where my father was born, and then travel to Huangshan, Zhangjiajie, and Beijing. In fact, we weren’t sure if the village was still there, so Wendy engaged her network of contacts and actually confirmed the village was the right one. I can say now, several weeks after returning back to the U.S., that China Discovery is the real deal – they did what they promised to do, plus more. Our trip involved quite a bit of traveling – several plane flights and train journeys – logistically, China Discovery was excellent. They had a tour guide and driver waiting for us at each new location, and comfortable private, air conditioned van to take us to our hotels and our targeted destinations. Our first two tour guides, Bruce and Ellen in Shandong and Huangshan, were outstanding – very intelligent and articulate guides who pampered us. Bruce was unfailingly attentive during our visits to Jinan, Taishan and the Confucius temple, which were rich cultural experiences, although the best part was visiting the old village. Ellen took us shopping at Huangshan and even bargained down some prices for us on Chinese brushes and inkstones, and then taught my kids some beginning Chinese painting lessons as we watched the sun set from a gorgeous viewpoint. Our tour guides in Zhangjiajie and Beijing were excellent at logistics and walked with us for many miles, including a beautiful hike along the Golden Whip Stream and a truly amazing and memorable hike along the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall. All the tour guides spoke English - the first two better than the second two, but all could communicate effectively in English. The hotels we stayed in were air conditioned and comfortable and in outstanding locations, and the food was good – breakfast was typically ok to good, and lunch was always excellent. The only time we had stomach problems was when we ate some odd food at a restaurant that had not been recommended by one of our tour guides. There were several changes to our itinerary during the trip – one hotel cancelled our rooms and gave them to government officials instead, and a planned train journey was cancelled – these were handled well: the tour guide booked us in a similar substitute hotel near the original one, and Wendy arranged for a plane flight instead of the train ride, which only cost us $60 American dollars more per person. The tour guides checked in frequently with China Discovery and I felt that they were monitoring us to make sure we were ok. They seemed to be sincere, honorable people who were trying their best to deliver their product – which was a great time touring China. There was one incident in particular that we were extremely grateful for – my son lost his passport on the plane during a domestic flight and we only realized this at 4 in the morning when trying to check into the hotel in Beijing. I called Wendy on a Saturday and she contacted the airport and located the missing passport. We were so thankful! Overall, this was a fantastic experience. China was not what I had imagined it to be – getting through customs was easy, we felt safe, and people were very friendly in the smaller towns (less friendly in Beijing, with the least friendly people being the foreign tourists!). Shandong, Huangshan, and Zhangjiajie were great places to visit, as was the Great Wall, as I had mentioned. We were less thrilled with the crowds at the Forbidden Palace and other touristy destinations in Beijing, but it was still very interesting. I was worried about the temperature and the air quality, but both were pretty good for most of the trip. The most important thing was that we felt safe during the entire trip (except during the time my son's passport was lost). Thank you, China Discovery, for a wonderful visit to China that my family will never forget.

If you are looking for traveling and not worrying much about planning your travel this is a great agency. I sent them a list of cities and they built a schedule for me. Everything went according to the plan, all pick ups on time and most of the guides on the tours with very good English.
Some of the tours were private and others with groups. The further we went into the country the less people spoke English so I definitely recommend having some kind of translator app for the times when your guide is not with you. Best places for me were Zhangjiajie, Huangshan mountain (spending the night there is amazing) and Guilin (it has it all, nightlife, shopping and a river cruise with amazing views of the mountains). Lyn was my agent with whom I discussed all the arrangements before the trip - I booked it all via email and used pay pal for payment and it was very easy.

Lyn was my agent with whom I discussed all the arrangements before the trip - I booked it all via email and used pay pal for payment and it was very easy.

Actually used the travel consultant to arrange a 4 day trip to Huangshan with 2 nights on the mountain 1 night in the city centre.
Very well organized and special thanks to our travel consultant Livia. Good communication throughout and the tour guide Sophia put great effort to keep us happy and meet our requests.
Would recommend this trip to anyone.
The weather is Huangshan was foggy but this added a new wonderful and romantic atmosphere to the trip !!
Many thanks to their team.

I used China Discovery (based in Chengdu) and our travel consultant was Yanny He to organise a private tour (car, guide, fast train tickets) to Huangshan and nearby villages. I selected this company after comparing with two other companies based on price as the level or response was the same. I found them most reasonable.
I organised my own hotel at Huangshan city and I think the Crowne Plaza was very good base as that’s the only western chain hotel that I am aware off and foreign credit card accepted.
One thing to note that foreign overseas credit cards in general are not accepted in any/most business/shop/ restaurant unless its part of a foreign chain or company. You will need cash for everything in general and that includes eating at the restaurants that the guide will take you to. Even the nice ones.
The booking and quick response was very much appreciated and Yanny’s patience in answering my questions was very nice and clear.
Generally a wonderful tour in terms or booking process, transport, organising, tour guide and tour itself. I paid using PayPal and did not encounter any issues.
I picked up my own fast train tickets from the Shanghai Hongqiao station after I received the reference number from Yanny. It was very easy.
The transport arrangements (car and driver) was polite, prompt, safe and on time each time. Car provide was a multi seater type van with space for luggage at the back. Very useful if you have a bit of luggage.
The tour guide provided (Jacky) was excellent. He is very patient and caring and speaks good English and helped me look after my parents very well making sure to stay and walk their pace while I go ahead on my own to take pictures on Mt. Huangshan. He was also very kind to help my parents with the small luggage on Mt Huangshan until we could pass it to the porter to carry the bag to the hotel. He also knew a lot of Chinese history and of the places we visited and point out places to get good pictures. He made sure everything went smoothly and provided useful tips to make the queue to get on the cable car easier also. We loved the places Jacky took us to for lunch. Food was good and standards were clean.
Note that if you don’t use a bag pack to carry stuff for your overnight stay you can get a porter to help with luggage but it will cost and charge according to weight. I think I t costs us 80RMB roughly for 8kgs.
The Xihai hotel 5 star wing is also good and the food in the hotel we found acceptable taste although it’s true a little bit more expensive than at bottom of mountain. But note that this hotel is a good at least 45 mins - 1 hour or hike up and down a few times to get to and from the Yungu Cable Car. It depends if you prefer more comfortable stay or shorter walk on the return trip to cable car. ....
Besides Huangshan, we also visited Hongcun and Xidi village in one day before the two days trip up and down Mt. Huangshan. Both worth a visit although if you had to choose, I would say you need only do Hongcun for the picturesque views and photos.

We have just returned from a 22 day private tour organized by the wonderful Wendy Dan.
We were a little worried about booking and paying for a tour run by a company in another country but Wendy eased all of our fears every step of the way, from her reassuring emails to letting us know every time the money was recieved. As for the tour we could not have had a better time. We saw many sights we had never seen before. Going in the off season was great, although a couple of our expected visits were closed due to the winter and lead up to golden week we did not want for fun filled days. The ques are also short in the off season. Eg 5 minute wait to get on the glass elevator instead of 4 hours.
We have visited so many places there are too many to mention. As this was our fourth trip to china we wanted to see something different. From the stone forrest to the rice field's filled with water, a show at romance park, cable car rides walks along the glass walkway we were not dissapointed. As for our guides we could not have chosen them better. They were all knowledgeable kind and considerate.our stand out guides were Nancy in Dali. Tony in Zhangjiajie and the wonderful Danny in Guilin. We have never smiled so much.
We can still hear Danny screaming in the haunted house. And smiling at us when we joined in we ith the happy dance at the end of the show.
The tour was way beyond our expectations .The cost was less than that of a huge group tour by one of the Aussie tour companies.
If you are thinking of going to China send an email to Chengdu bamboo international tours( the one in Chengdu) you won't be disappointed, from the care that they take to create your itinerary to dropping off a gift to us in Chengdu. Thankyou Wendy for the trip of a lifetime. We wouldnt hesitate in recommending you and this company.
