Get to Xinjiang by Train - Xinjiang Railways and Trains
Xinjiang can be reached by train as well. The main railway linking Xinjiang with other parts of China is the Lanzhou Urumqi High Speed Railway (Lanxin High Speed Railway), an upgraded rail along the Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway. Opened at the end of 2014, the railway starts from Lanzhou (in Gansu), runs through Xining (in Qinghai), Gansu’s Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang and Turpan of Xinjiang, and finally arrives in Urumqi. Modern and advanced engineering perfectly links major sites along the Silk Road and greatly shortens the travel time among them.

Beijing to Xinjiang
Beijing is directly connected with Xinjiang by the 2540-km-long Beijing-Urumqi Expressway, which is the very famous G7 National Highway. Compared to the time-consuming road trip, travelers have other convenient and efficient ways to get to Xinjiang.
1. By Flight: Faster (More Recommended)
Xinjiang is far away from Beijing and taking a flight is the fastest and most convenient way to travel from Beijing to Xinjiang. Generally, Beijing has about 20 direct flights to Urumqi daily, and some direct and stopover flights to Turpan, Kashgar, Karamay and other destinations in Xinjiang. The best idea is to fly to Urumqi from Beijing directly, because there are the largest number of flights and air travel time is acceptable.

2. By Train: Slow Over Night Train
Beijing West Railway Station runs 2 normal speed trains to Xinjiang’s Urumqi and Turpan daily. All are overnight trains getting to the cities on the second day or the third day.

Our Advice: If you want to visit Xinjiang from Beijing directly, air travel is recommended. If you plan to visit some cities between them, we highly recommend you make a transfer in cities like Xian, Lanzhou or other cities with frequent flights to Urumqi.
Xian to Xinjiang
Xian was the starting point of the Silk Road and a great ancient capital of China with massive historical sites. Many travelers love to trace back to Silk Road from Xian all the way to Xinjiang.

There are direct flights flying from Xian to different destinations in Xinjiang, such as Urumqi, Kashgar, Karamay, Hotan, etc. With short duration, flying is a better choice for travelers willing to reach Xinjiang from Xian directly.

2. By Train:
Xian has both bullet trains and normal speed trains to Xinjiang’s Turpan and Urumqi. Even the faster bullet trains take more than 10 hours. If you plan to visit Tianshui, Lanzhou, Xining, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang along the ancient Silk Road, you can take the bullet train travel, because the train will make stops in these places.

Get to Urumqi
Urumqi is the capital and the most important transfer center in Xinjiang. It’s usually the first stop for a Xinjiang tour.
1. By Flight:
Urumqi Diwopu Airport is an airport serving Urumqi. It is located about 18 km, 30 minutes’ drive to downtown. The airport operates flights to Urumqi from many Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xian, Guangzhou, Guilin, Harbin, Hangzhou, Hohhot, Kunming, Ngari (Tibet), etc., and destinations in Xinjiang with airports.
2. By Train:
Urumqi is accessible by train. There are daily bullet trains to Urumqi departing from Xian, Tianshui, Lanzhou, Xining, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang. The terminus is Urumqi Railway Station, which is about 10 km, 20 minutes’ drive to the downtown.

Get to Kashgar
Kashgar in remote southwestern Xinjiang is another top destination tourists love to explore. This historical city has charming ethnic cultures, a long history as well as stunning natural scenery around. It is usually visited together with Urumqi and Turpan, and is often used as a transportation hub in southern Xinjiang.
1. By Flight:
Taking a flight to Kashgar is the most time-saving and common way. You can fly to Kashgar International Airport from Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Changsha, Lanzhou, Jiayugaun, Kunming, Ngari (Tibet), Zhengzhou and other cities in China. Downtown Kashgar and Kashgar Old Town are around 10 km, 20 minutes’ drive from the airport.
2. By Train:
Very few tourists take a train to Kashgar, because at present, there are only normal speed trains running to Kashgar from Urumqi, Hotan, Korla, Kucha and some other cities in Xinjiang, and several cities out of Xinjiang, including Xian, Baoji, Tianshui, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang (Liuyuan), etc. The train trip is dozens of hours, quite time-wasting and tedious.

- Kashgar to Tashkurgan: Tashkurgan is about 290 km from Kashgar City. It takes about 5 hours to travel from Kashgar to Thshkurgan and more than 6 hours by long-distance coach. You can stop and view the amazing Karakul Lake, Muztagh Ata, Baishan Lake & Baishan Mountain and the magnificent landscape of the Pamirs.
- Kashgar to Shache: Shache County is about 200 km, 3 hours’ drive from Kashgar.

Get to Turpan
Turpan is the location of the Flaming Mountains and the unique Kerez canal system. Besides the famous grapes, it also has lots of cultural ruins, like the Jiaohe Ancient City, Gaochang Ancient City, Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves and Tomb of Astana. As the gateway to Urumqi, Turpan is usually visited before Urumqi by train travelers.
1. By Train:
Turpan North Railway Station has bullet trains and normal speed trains to Turpan while Turpan Railway Station runs provincial trains inside Xinjiang only. Travelers often take a bullet train from Turpan from Dunhuang (Liuyuan South Railway Station, 3h 10m-3h 40m). A bullet train trip to Turpan from Jiayuguan takes about 5-5.5 hours, around 6-7 hours from Zhangye and longer from Lanzhou. So, we advise you to travel from the above cities to Dunhuang and later get to Turpan by bullet train.

2. By Flight:
Turpan Jiaohe Airport is a small airport flying just a couple of routes between Turpan and Lanzhou (less than 3 hours), Baotou (about 5 hours) and Korla. For the limited flights and irregular schedules, the flight is not recommended.
- Turpan to Kumtag Desert: The desert lies about 90 km (56 miles) away from Turpan City for around 1.5 hours’ drive.

Get to Kanas Lake and Hemu Village
Kanas is a fairyland scenic area and one of the best natural highlights in Xinjiang. The main attractions inside the nature reserve are the beautiful Kanas Lake, three bays (Wolong Bay, Moon Bay and Fairy Bay), picturesque Hemu Tuva Village and many other spots. Kanas is located in the Altai Mountains, north of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Northern Xinjiang. Most travelers get to Kanas from Urumqi by flight and land drive, because the Kanas Airport has no flights flying from other cities out of Xinjiang. Train travel needing complicated and long-hour transfers is not recommended.
1. Get to Kanas By Flight:
Burqin Kanas Airport is the nearest airport to Kanas, which is only about 47 km, 1.5 hours’ drive to Jiadengyu (ticket office & entrance of Kannas). The airport is very small and has only several flight routes from Urumqi, Altay, Fuyun and Bole of Xinjiang.
2. Get to Kanas By Private Drive:
Driving from Urumqi to Kanas via Wu’erhe Ghost City (in Karamay) and Rainbow Beach (Wucaitan in Burqin). The drive and midway sightseeing takes about 1 day.
Get to Hemu Village:
To Hemu Village: You can take a private car to Hemu Village directly from Burqin Kanas Airport and other places in Xinjiang. Another popular option is to transfer from Jiadengyu to Hemu Village by official tourist bus. The whole bus transfer is 2 hours or so.

Get to Ili
Ili is short for Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. It is a wonderful tourist region in Xinjiang, most known for vast beautiful grasslands - Karajan, Narati, Tangbula, Zhaosu and the visual feast of Apricot Valley during spring, stunning Sayram Lake and large scale of dreamy Lavender fields.
Though there are some airports serving different destinations in Ili, travelers usually take a road trip to Ili from Urumqi, Kanas, Karamay and other places in Northern Xinjiang, because it’s convenient to visit Ili’s major attractions by drive. If you insist on air travel, it’s better to take a non-stop flight to Yining from Urumqi (about 1 hour 10 minutes) and then drive to other spots in Ili.

Get to Hotan
Hotan, most famous for tree treasures of Hotan Jade, Atlas and hand-made woolen carpet, is a popular tourist destination in Southern Xinjiang. Hotan is in the southernmost Xinjiang, and can be reached by flight and land drive. But few people make a special trip to Hotan. Normally, travelers extend their Kashgar tour to Hotan.
● Kashgar to Hotan by Drive (Most Recommended): Hotan is about 500 km (6 hours’ drive) southeast of Kashgar. If you take a drive, you can visit Shache (Ye’erqianghan Mausoleum - Tombs of the Yarkand Khans) on the way.
● Kashgar to Hotan by Flight: Kashgar Airport flies one direct flight to Hotan daily. The air travel is merely 1 hour.
● Kashgar to Hotan by Train: Kashgar Railway Station delivers 5 - 6 normal trains to Hotan each day on the Kashgar-Hotan Railway. A train trip takes about 5.5 -7 hours.
● Kashgar to Hotan by Long-distance Coach: Buses depart from Kashgar to Hotan between 09:30 and 21:30. It’s a 9-hour drive, which is not recommended.

How to Get around Xinjiang
Xinjiang is a vast tourist region where destinations and attractions are scattered far away from each other. How to Get to Xinjiang: Urumqi is the transfer hub of Xinjiang, and it receives flights from Beijing (4h), Shanghai (5h), Xian (4h), Chengdu (4h), Chongqing (4h), Changsha (4.5h), Xining (2.5h), Dalian (4h), Guangzhou (4.5h), Lanzhou (2.5h), Yinchuan (3h), etc., as well as high speed trains from Xian (13.5h), Lanzhou(10.5h), Xining (9.5h), Zhangye (7.5h), Jiayuguan (6h), Dunhuang (4h), etc.
Best Time to Visit Xinjiang: It is available to visit Xinjiang all year round, but May ~ October is the best time for the most comfortable weather and most beautiful scenery
