Kashar International Airport now operates flights between Urumqi (2h), Lanzhou (4h), Beijing (4.5h), Chengdu (4.5h), Xian (5h), etc. The airport is about 9 km, 20 minutes' drive to Kashgar Old City, so it is still most recommended to stay in Kashgar downtown. But if you arrive in Kashgar late or need to catch a flight in the early morning and just want to stay nearby, here are some hotels, too. Most choices around Kashar International Airport are 3-star or 2-star hotels. They are simply decorated and can meet your basic accommodation needs. Karakul Lake is a beautiful alpine lake about 191 km, 4 hours' drive to the southwest of Kashgar downtown. Its pristine scenery and tranquil environment have gradually gained popularity among tourists. However, there are no hotels near Karakul lakes. Therefore, for a better accommodation experience, it is most recommended to go back to Kashgar and find a hotel there after visiting Karakul Lake. Or you can keep driving about 100 km to Tashkurgan. But most hotels in Tashkurgan are 2-star hotels or simple homestays and the overall accommodation condition is not as good as that in Kashgar.

Plus arrival and departure days, you’d better plan at least 4 days for your Kashgar trip. If you want to extend your trip to Tashkurgan, you need at least 5 days. You can spend 2 days exploring attractions in Kashgar city and its old town, such as Kashgar Bazaar, Kashgar Old City, Id Kah Mosque, Abakh Hoja Tomb, Ancient Tea House, etc., then have a day trip to Karakul Lake from Kashgar. If you want to experience something more authentic, Tashkurgan, about 3.5 hours’ drive from Kashgar, is strongly recommended.
