Taking the subway will be a good choice for independent travellers. At present in September 2019, there are Xian Metro Line 2 and Line 4 for your choice. Passengers can take Line 2 in the railway station while the entrance of Line 4 is at the north square of the railway station. If you want to go to somewhere near the city center such as the Bell Tower, Ancient City Wall, Muslim Quarter, Metro Line 2 will take you there directly in about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum, and Tang Paradise, then Metro Line 4 will be more convenient and you will need about 1 hour. Subway ticket in Xian is usually CNY 2-5 per person according to the distance you travel.
Bus - A Budget but Time-consuming Way to Travel Around
Currently, there are 9 bus lines passing Xian North Railway Station, which are Bus 108, 263, 264, 265, 266, 329, 360, 362, and 727. But you will need to make a transfer to get to Xian downtown. Take the Bell Tower for example. To get there, you need to take Bus 266 at Xian Railway Station South Square to Nanshaomen Station, and then transfer to Bus 26. When you finally get to the destination, it will be 1.5h later. So taking a bus can be an option, but is not very recommended.

Taxi - Convenient Except for 2 Main Problems
Taking a taxi from Xian North Railway Station to downtown, still, taking Bell Tower as an example, will cost about CNY 45 and take around 1 hour. It would be a convenient way to get around the city except that there are two problems you may encounter. One is the language. You can make a note of the place you want to go in Chinese in advance and show it to the taxi driver in case there is some misunderstanding. The other one is that there are many privately-run taxis. Many people can not tell them from the legal ones. They usually don’t have a proper commercial taxi license and will charge higher than normal rate. If you plan to take a taxi, find those with a taximeter and make sure that they charge by the meter.
How to Plan a Xi’an Tour
As the ancient capital city for 13 dynasties in China's history, Xi’an has always been a hot tourist destination in China. Terracotta Warriors and Horses buried for more than 2000 years is definitely a must-see. After that, take a stroll or rent a bike on the Ancient City Wall, the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China, to enjoy panoramic views of modern Xi’an. Then try some local snacks at the bustling and lively Muslim Quarter. On the next day, you can head to Da Cien Temple and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda to feel the Buddhist culture in Xi’an, then get a deeper understanding of the past of this city in Shaanxi History Museum.
If you are interested in mountain climbing, don’t miss the challenging Mount Huashan which is famous for lofty peaks and steep paths. If you have extra days, you can enrich your China tour by visiting more cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, or retracing the old Silk Road.
