The summer heat starts its loading since the beginning of June in Xian. The average temperature is 25°C / 77°F; the average high temperature is 31°C / 88°F; the average low temperature is 19°C / 66°F; the Average AQI is 66. Although the rainfall is not that heavy compared with cities in the southern China, and there will occasional rainy days. Since the Dragon boats festival holiday always falls in this month, do not miss the chance to enjoy the yummy Zongzi and avoid the crowd as much as possible.

Xian is possibly one of the most hottest provincial city in China. The average temperature is 27°C / 81°F; the average high temperature is 32°C / 90°F; the average low temperature is 22°C / 72°F; the Average AQI is 55. While the air is always good, the temperature might reach 40°C sometimes, and the average humidity gets to the climax of one whole year. About 1.5km away from the Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum is buried the Terracotta Warriors and horses, which are known as one of the great archaeological finds in China, the iconic site of Xian created to accompany the first emperor of China, Qinshihuang(259~210 BC) into the afterlife. There are more than 200 heads of countries who have visited Terracotta Warriors. Since the terracotta warriors unearthed are placed indoor and comfortable to visit even in the hot summer. To escape from the summer heat, different museums in Xian offer you both comfortable indoor environment and abundant exhibits. Among them, Shaanxi History Museum is a must-go place.
Located in the northwest side of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an, with an exhibition hall area of 11,000 square meters, Shaanxi History Museum owns more than 370,000 cultural relics. From the early stage of primitive time to the modern times, the exhibits range from simple stone tools to the fancy gold wares, and offer illuminating explanations in English. All kinds of artifacts and relics stretch more than one million years. Among them, bronze wares of Shang and Zhou dynasties are exquisite; pottery figurines of all dynasties are in various forms; Gold and silver wares of Han and Tang dynasties are unique in China, and murals of Tang tombs are unparalleled in the world.

Muslim Quarter 回民街 Pinyin: huí mín jiē

Next to the Drum Tower, the Muslim Quarter in Xian downtown is actually a block consists of couples of streets for over 1,000 years old. It is very famous for its abundant delicious local Xian snacks and rich culture of ancient immigration. Diverse food, hospitable people, characteristic buildings in Ming and Qing dynasties, traditional mosques, make this block a must-go place for tourists from home and abroad.
Also known for its local cuisines, the Muslim Quarter is a popular night market, especially during summer days, at which you can try the Featured Pita Bread Soaked in Lamb Soup, dumplings with spicy and soar soup, Chinese hamburger, and mutton kebab, etc. More than 300 sorts of food are selling here, which makes itself a fantastic site for numerous foodies. Drum Tower and Bell Tower 钟鼓楼 Pinyin: zhōng gǔ lóu

Located in the city center, upon the bustling avenues, Bell tower and Drum Tower are right next to each other and they were used to announce the time and alarm the emergency. They are two sister buildings, which were constructed around 600 years ago and there is a Chinese phrase, "morning bell and dark drum" describing the running of time. At present, they are not used as timers anymore. Instead, some historic relics and ancient art works are presented inside the two towers, forming two meaningful museums and telling the history of Xian for the coming visitors. When the lighting is on, the two towers are incredibly beautiful at night. Hanging out there and having a walk on a summer night should be an unmissable experience for your Xian adventure.
Things to Do in Xian in Summer
Watch the Wonderful Tang Dynasty Show
The tangible relics have left in the museum,while the culture get inherited generation after generation. There are many show places in Xian offering you the spectacular Tang Dynasty Show and Dumpling Banquet. The actresses and actors get dressed in the costumes referring to Tang people’s style in the ancient time, also the music is composed according to the historical data. There are different themed shows, such as the love story between the emperor Li longji and his beautiful concubine Yang Guifei; the legend of the famous female emperor Wu Zetian; the story about Terracotta Warriors and the first emperor Qinshihuang. You can get to see these fancy shows in many attractions in Xian, such as Tang Paradise, Tang Dynasty Palace, and Huaqing Palace. It’s also popular watching the show with dumpling banquet served, and the dumplings are not normal ones, which are well presented with fancy shapes and multiple colors and high standard ingredients.
Enjoy the Night Markets and Bars in Xian
The summer offers more things to do at night. Besides the Muslim quarter, there are more night markets scattered around Xian city, such as the Barley Market Street (大麦市街回民风味小吃街), North Gate Night Market (北院门夜市), Eastern Street Night Market (东新街夜市), Nanshaomen Night Market (南稍门夜市), Boshulin Night Market (柏树林夜市), etc. You can find the authentic Xian flavor at these night markets and food streets. Besides, if you would like to have a drink, there are numerous featured bars and tea house in Xian, such as Fubaoge Teahouse, Vice Versa Bar, Yanta Bar Street (near Giant Wild Goose Pagoda), Salsa Club, and the Terracotta Warriors themed bar - Park Qin, etc. Most bars open from 8pm till the early morning.
Try the Chinese Calligraphy and Traditional Painting
If you are interested in Chinese culture or come with your children, it is a good choice to spend your time at museum to appreciate the historic heritages, or experience the culture by personally learning the Chinese calligraphy and traditional paintings. Tangbo Art Museum, in the east of city offers classes in English or Chinese such as paper-cutting learning, shadow puppets making, rubbings making, and traditional Chinese painting learning with the collections of Shannxi folk arts, ancient paintings exhibited in historical sequence, and local contemporary artists’ artworks.
