En nuestro camino hacia Dunhuang, hacemos una parada a uno de los lugares que recomiendo encarecidamente. Las Grutas budistas de Yulin.

Translation: On our way to Dunhuang, we make a stop to one of the places that I highly recommend - the Buddhist Grottoes of Yulin.

Se trata de unas cuevas excavadas en un pequeño acantilado cerca de un río de origen glaciar en pleno desierto de Gobi.

Existen unas 42 cuevas , pero solo 6 se pueden visitar. La reserva es imprescindible para poder disfrutar de la visita con una guía que hable inglés.

Los frescos que se encuentran en el interior de cada una de ellas , amén de lo bien conservados, van desde el S VII al S XI. Los colores son los originales. El más caro era el azul que procedía del lapislázulis y lo traían de Pakistán y Afganistán. El verde lo sacaban de la malakita y el rojo del cinabrio Todas con grutas budistas de las épocas de las Dinastías Tang y Yuan.

Otra de las joyas de La Corona de este viaje , junto con el Monasterio Tibetano de Labrang y las Grutas de Yulin son las famosas Grutas de Mogao. Lo primero que quiero señalar es que tanto en las de Yulin como en las de Mogao está terminantemente prohibido hacer fotos en el interior de las cuevas. De hecho no tienen ningún tipo de luz solamente quedan iluminados con la linterna de la guía.

Translation: Another jewel of this trip, together with the Tibetan Monastery of Labrang and the Yulin Grottoes are the famous Mogao Grottoes. The first thing I want to point out is that in both Yulin and Mogao, it is strictly forbidden to take pictures inside the caves. In fact there is not any type of light, they are only illuminated with the guide's flashlight.

Para visitar Mogao es imprescindible reservar las entradas en la oficina de ventas que se encuentra en la entrada de Dunhuang, pues así como las de Yulin estaban vacías , las de Mogao tienen muchísimo turismo nacional.

Translation: To visit Mogao it is essential to book tickets at the ticket office once you enter Dunhuang. Though those caves of Yulin might be empty, those of Mogao have a lot of tourists.

De todas maneras están muy bien organizados. Y no todos los grupos visitan las mismas cuevas. Son un conjunto de 492 Grutas , no todas contienen pinturas , de las cuales sólo son visitables unas 40. Se divide en dos zonas ; La norte y la Sur. Las de la zona sur son simples cavidades en donde alguno de los monjes se aislaba para meditar. Las visitas se hacen obligatoriamente guiadas. Y tienen guías en inglés para los extranjeros.

Estas cuevas son tan antiguas como el S IV hasta el S XI. Con la entrada se visitan unas 8 cuevas y de esas 8 solo dos son comunes a todos los grupos. La del Gran Buda Erguido y la del Buda Tumbado.

Antes de pasar a las Cuevas, en el centro de interpretación pasan un par de películas , con auriculares en inglés, muy interesantes. En ellas te dan información de que como y porque se crearon estas cuevas y la importancia de la ciudad de Dunhuang durante la época de la Ruta de la Seda y cómo surgió esta ciudad en este oasis del desierto del Gobi. En la segunda te dan una información detallada de los diferentes frescos que se encuentran en el interior de las cuevas y su significado.

Otra de las visitas de Dunhuang es El Lago del Creciente Lunar. Se trata de un Lago en forma de media luna rodeado por altísimas dunas de arena coronado en su parte alta por un Templo Chino. No se seca nunca y está alimentando por un río subterráneo

Para ir hasta el puedes optar por diferentes maneras desde el centro de interpretación. La mayoría de los turistas chinos optan por el paseo en camello. También puedes ir en un quad y caminando que es lo que hicimos nosotras

En esas dunas se realizan un sinfín de actividades, entre otras el escalar las dunas hasta su parte más alta para ver las vistas.

Estas 4 últimas ciudades , incluyendo Turpan que pasaré a describir a continuación, son ciudades más pequeñas que las macro urbes más turísticas. Me parecieron mucho más amables y agradables sin las aglomeraciones humanas de los grandes núcleos de población. Dunhuang es una ciudad por la que da gusto pasearse y tiene un mercado nocturno un interesante en el que puedes encontrar tanto artesanía como puestos de comida callejera. Desde la estación de trenes de Lyguan a unas 2 h de Dunhuang nos subimos a un tren cama nocturno hasta Turpan en donde llegamos a las 6;30 de la mañana del día siguiente. Aquí entramos en la Región Autónoma Uyghur de Xinjiang. Una parte del país situado totalmente al Oeste de China en donde las minorías son mayoría frente a los Han.

Translation: These last 4 cities, including Turpan, which I will describe below, are smaller cities than most tourist macro cities. I found them much more friendly and pleasant without the human agglomerations of the large population centers. Dunhuang is a city that gives pleasure to walk and has an interesting night market where you can find both crafts and street food stalls. At Liuyuan train station about 2 hours from Dunhuang we get on a night train to Turpan where we arrive at 6:30 am the next day. Here we enter the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, a part of the country located entirely in the west of China where minorities are the majority compared with the Han people.

En Turpan tienes más la sensación de encontrarte en Asía Central que en China. Es una zona que sigue siendo sensible para el gobierno central y los controles de policía para verificar los pasaportes son frecuentes. La comida también es distinta. Más parecida a la de los países que se encuentran en sus fronteras. La ciudad también tiene un estilo de edificación más parecido al estilo musulman. Aquí nada de grandes edificios colmena como en el resto de China. En el colegio los chicos aprenden los dos idiomas : chino y mandarín. El idioma Uyghur proviene del tronco de las lenguas Altaï del Asía Central. Y todas las señalizaciones vienen en los dos idiomas.

Lo más destacado, desde el punto de vista turístico son la Mezquita Emin Minaret, construida en barro con un minarete espectacular de 44 m de estilo centro asiático

Las Grutas de Bezeklik. Del tipo de las anteriormente visitas en Yulin y Mogao , pero en peores condiciones de conservación. Entre algunos exploradores extranjeros que se dedicaron a robar frescos y esculturas y los destrozos de algunas gentes locales queda ya muy poco de las pinturas originales.

Translation: The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are the type of the previous visits in Yulin and Mogao, but in worse conservation conditions. Because of the destruction of some local people and some foreign explorers who stole frescoes and sculptures, few of the original paintings remain.

La Antigua Ciudad de Jiaohe construida enteramente de barro fue la capital del antiguo Estado de Chesi. Tras Bam en Irán queda como la ciudad de barro más importante. Está edificada en una isla que quedaba entre dos Ríos. Con lo cual era bastante difícil que fuera tomada por ejércitos enemigos

Merece la pena adentrarse por sus calles hasta el centro de la ciudad en donde se encuentran los restos de una estupa budista.

Otra visita singular es aquella en la que te adentras por el sistema de canales llamado Karez. Se trata de un original sistema de irrigación originario de Afganistán e Irán. De hecho la denominación Karez es una palabra Persa. Algunos Se construyeron hace más de 2.000 años y se trata de unos túneles naturales formados por el subsuelo rocoso del Gobi por donde cuando ocurre el deshielo el agua baja por esos canales debido a la pendiente natural de la ladera hasta los campos de la ciudad de Turpan. Al ser un canal subterráneo el agua no se evapora con el calor del desierto La ciudad de Turpan debe su existencia a estos pozos y canales. Si se secarán o desaparecieran la ciudad estaría condenada a morir también

Translation: Another unique visit is the one in which you enter through the system of channels called Karez. It is an irrigation system originating in Afghanistan and Iran. A lo largo de los canales se han construido cada 2 metros unos pozos de ventilación para evitar que al estancarse el agua cuando acaba el deshielo se pueda pudrir debido a la falta de oxígeno.

A 3 horas en coche desde Turpán queda la ciudad de Urumqi. Capital de la region autónoma de Xinjiang. Adiós ciudades pequeñas y más amables. Volvemos a una gran ciudad. Lo más destacable de esta gran urbe es su fantástico museo. Que contiene la historia de la Ruta de la seda. También puedes ver muchos objetos procedentes de los principales yacimientos arqueológicos de esta región.

Translation: The city of Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, is 3 hours away by car from Turpan. Goodbye small and friendlier cities. We return to a great city. Puedes dar un paseo por alguna de las embarcaciones que dan la vuelta al Lago o simplemente caminar por los senderos que rodean el lago.

Ahora daremos algunas recomendaciones prácticas que me dieron anteriormente a mi y que me sirvieron. La primera es si estas acostumbrado a desayunar café ,en cuanto te alejas de las zonas turísticas en donde van los turistas occidentales no encontrarás para poder desayunar, llévate o compra en un súper un bote de nescafé. Pues si no te alojas en un hotel Internacional de 5 estrellas , lo que no fue nuestro caso, solo tendrás desayuno chino. Es decir noodles, verduras, sopas y carne. Nosotras nos comprábamos o pan o galletas en los mercados para desayunar al día siguiente y nuestro nescafé.

A partir de Lanzhou ya no se encuentra a nadie que hable inglés. Algunos lugares u hoteles tienen una aplicación en la que hablas en inglés y se lo traducen en chino a ellos. Pero eso solo lo pudimos aprovechar en dos ocasiones.
