Exploring the Enchanting Yangtze River Delta

Jiangnan, geographically known as the Yangtze River Delta, is a region encompassing a cluster of renowned, charming cities. It's interesting to note that Jiangnan has been favored not only by numerous emperors throughout history, but also by tourists like Klaus. In April 2023, our customer Klaus, an expat in Beijing, had explored three of the most popular cities in this area: Nanjing, Suzhou, and Hangzhou.

In fact, Klaus had been living in Beijing for several years, which provided him with a solid understanding of China. In January, he had a journey to Yunnan Province customized by Tracy from China Discovery. Day 1 Beijing to Nanjing High Speed train

On the first day, Klaus took a high speed train from Beijing to Nanjing. The driver picked him at the railway station and then took him to his hotel – New Century Hotel, which Klaus thought was good and location excellent.

After a brief period of rest, Klaus visited to the magnificent Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, the final resting place of Zhuyuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The mausoleum was nestled within a sprawling park, emanating a serene atmosphere. Klaus took his time, spending approximately 1.5 hours exploring the grandeur of the site and marveling at the tranquil surroundings that enveloped the mausoleum.

Day 2 Nanjing Highlights Discovery

After breakfast, Klaus was warmly welcomed by his tour guide, George, and their day of exploration started. Their first attraction was the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, situated at the base of the majestic Purple Mountain. This mausoleum park serves as a tribute to Sun Yat-sen, often referred to as the "Father of Modern China." Klaus was captivated by the magnificent architecture and elegant landscapes, considering it one of the significant highlights of his Nanjing visit. Their itinerary continued with a visit to the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, which Klaus regarded as another remarkable highlight. The museum offered a profound insight into the events of World War Two, leaving Klaus deeply moved and enlightened by the historical context it presented.

Day 3 Nanjing Highlights and High Speed train to Hangzhou

On the following day, Klaus and George continued their exploration, starting with a visit to the Xuanwumen Section of the Ancient City Wall. Klaus leisurely strolled along this historic structure, while George shared fascinating insights about the rich history and significance of Xuanwum Gate. The experience allowed Klaus to appreciate the architectural marvel and the stories embedded within the ancient wall.

After sightseeing, they made their way to Niushou Mountain, a cultural park dedicated to Buddhist heritage, with a particular focus on Buddha's relics. As Klaus arrived, his eyes was caught by Foding Palace with awe-inspiring architecture that adorned the park. The serene atmosphere of Niushou Mountain provided Klaus with a tranquil retreat, where he could reflect on the spiritual significance.

After Nanjing sightseeing, Klaus evaluated that "George was an excellent guide with deep knowledge about Nanjing".

In the evening, Klaus bid farewell to the historically rich city of Nanjing and commenced his journey to Hangzhou, a city steeped in pietism. The around 1-hour high-speed train allowed Klaus to swiftly transition from one captivating destination to another.

Day 4 Hangzhou Exploration

In the morning, Klaus was warmly greeted by his guide, Lulu, at the hotel. They began their day by heading to West Lake, an iconic and renowned destination in Hangzhou, and a beloved symbol of not just the city, but of China itself. As they explored the vast scenic area, Klaus's eyes were treated to a plethora of small attractions and breathtaking views, providing him with a delightful visual feast.

Following their time at West Lake, Klaus ventured to the Meijiawu Longjing Tea Plantation, where he had the unique opportunity to immerse himself in the world of tea. Engaging in the traditional practice of picking tea leaves, Klaus experienced firsthand the art and skill involved in producing the renowned Longjing tea. The experience allowed Klaus to appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication behind this esteemed tea variety.

Day 5 Wuzhen and Suzhou

On the next morning, the guide met Klaus again and they transferred to Wuzhen Water Town, which was known as the Venice of the East. Upon their arrival, Klaus delved into the exploration of Xizha, the Western Area of Wuzhen. Unlike its bustling counterpart, Xizha offered a serene and spacious atmosphere, captivating Klaus with its charm and beauty.

As Klaus meandered along the winding river, he marveled at the sight of ancient buildings that stood gracefully on its banks. The town's romantic and tranquil ambiance was further enhanced by the presence of various workshops, stores, and museums, each offering a glimpse into the cultural heritage of Wuzhen. Klaus found these highlights to be truly enchanting, as he immersed himself in the rich history and picturesque surroundings of this idyllic water town.

After Klaus had a memorable time enjoying the enchanting Wuzhen Water Town, he embarked on the next leg of his journey by taking a convenient high-speed train that swiftly transported him to Suzhou in just around one hour. Upon his arrival at the train station, Klaus was promptly greeted by his driver, who then facilitated a smooth transfer to his hotel in Suzhou.

Day 6 Suzhou Exploration and Departure

On the final day of his journey, Klaus threw himself in the captivating highlights of Suzhou, creating cherished memories along the way with the help of his guide Claire. His itinerary included visits to the renowned Lingering Garden, where he marveled at the exquisite landscapes and serene beauty. Klaus also explored the charming Shantang Street, experiencing its vibrant atmosphere and immersing himself in the local culture.

Continuing his adventure, Klaus ventured to Tiger Hill, where he discovered historical landmarks and breathtaking views. The rich history and cultural significance of this site left a lasting impression on Klaus. Lastly, he had the opportunity to visit the esteemed Suzhou No.1 Silk Factory, where he gained insight into the intricate artistry of silk production. With each destination offering a unique and memorable experience, Klaus's final day in Suzhou was filled with awe-inspiring sights and cultural immersion. After a fulfilling day of sightseeing, the guide and driver accompanied Klaus to the railway station, ensuring he caught his train back to Beijing safely.

5 Days Shanghai Hangzhou Suzhou Highlights Tour

China Discovery organized a 6 days sightseeing tour for me to Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuzhen and Suzhou 3-8 April. The trip was excellent organised as regards all the logistics. The guides who accompanied me were very professional with comprehensive knowledge about history, culture and food. And very kind and helpful. Each of the cities are unique in their own way with many historical sights, beautiful buildings and landscapes plus very good restaurants, bars, cafés etc and therefore deserve more time individually.
