A Tale of Two Summers: Exploring China's Southern Wonders

-- Josh and His Mother's Moments in Guilin, Guizhou, and Sichuan

Josh, a seasoned traveler from the United States, has embarked on several incredible trips with China Discovery, exploring the diverse landscapes and cultures of this vast country. From the ancient Silk Road to Suzhou’s classical gardens and Harbin’s icy splendor, Josh’s travels reflect his deep love for China’s history and natural beauty. Our help with the itineraries adds to his joy of travel. In Josh’s own words, “Up till now (2022), I have always been very happy with the level of service provided by China Discovery, which is why I have used them for 4 different trips.”

This trust in China Discovery brought Josh back to us once again in the summer of 2023 and 2024. Joined by his mother, he set out to experience the wonders of southern China, blending nature and culture into two unforgettable adventures. From the stunning rice terraces of Longsheng to the karst peaks of Guilin, the sacred mountains of Guizhou and Sichuan, and the vibrant cityscapes of Chongqing and Chengdu, their journey was a celebration of China’s unparalleled diversity and charm.

We are deeply grateful for Josh’s continued support and are honored to have been a part of his travel experiences. Here are some highlight moments of his latest trips, showcasing the incredible destinations and cherished memories that have made his journey so special.

2023 - Guilin, Guangxi Province

Day 1~2: Longsheng (Ethnic Village and Rice Terrace)

Josh and his mother began their adventure in Longsheng, where they visited the Huangluo Yao Village, home to the Yao ethnic group’s famed “long-haired women.” They were fascinated by the vibrant cultural demonstrations and felt warmly welcomed by the locals.

Their trek through the Longji Rice Terrace was equally memorable, with stunning views that seemed to shift with the sunlight. The peacefulness of the landscape made it a perfect start to their journey.

Day 3: Guilin (Li River Cruise)

The duo’s next stop was Guilin, where they cruised along the Li River to Yangshuo. The surreal karst landscapes left them in awe. The scenery looked like it belonged in a classic Chinese painting.

Day 4~5: Yangshuo (Yulong River, Moon Hill and Xianggong Mountain)

In Yangshuo, they explored the countryside on bicycles, passing by the Yulong River and the iconic Moon Hill. A highlight was visiting a local family, where they gained insights into rural life and enjoyed genuine hospitality. The following day, they woke up early to witness the sunrise from Xianggong Mountain, where the best panoramic view of the karst landscape and Li River is offered.

Guilin Travel Tips: 1) Located in the low latitude, Guilin is overall mild and humid all year round with four distinctive seasons—a long frost-free period, abundant sunshine, a long summer and a short winter. 2) Longsheng (Longji Rice Terraces) is one of the hottest scenic areas in Guilin. If your schedule allows, a visit there is highly recommended. 3) Apart from walking and biking along the Yulong River, Yangshuo, bamboo rafting is a classic activity to enjoy the fun and beauty of the river.

2024 - Fanjing Mountain, Chongqing, Chengdu & Leshan

Day 1~3: Arrival and Fanjing Mountain

In 2024, Josh and his mother began their second southern adventure in Guizhou, hiking the mystical Fanjing Mountain. The otherworldly landscapes, including the iconic “Mushroom Stone” and Red Clouds Golden Summit, were awe-inspiring. The ascent as challenging but incredibly rewarding, with cloud-covered peaks adding an ethereal touch.

Fanjing Mountain Travel Tips: 1) The hiking trails up and down the Red Clouds Golden Summit are extremely steep. Have a panorama view of the Red Clouds Golden Summit from Old Golden Summit only is more suggested if you feel tough to overcome these trails. 2) The highlights of Fanjingshan gather on the mountains’ top. You are suggested to spend more time on the top instead of the hillside. Besides, you are advised to go uphill by cable car to save your energy.

Day 4~6: Chongqing (Wulong and Downtown)

In Chongqing, they ventured into the Wulong Karst National Geology Park, marveling at the grandeur of the Three Natural Bridges and exploring its fascinating sinkholes. The dramatic landscapes, famously featured in films, gave them a sense of stepping into another world.

In Chongqing’s downtown area, they experienced the city’s unique charm through its famous light rail system, including the Liziba Station, where the train passes directly through a residential building. At E’ling Park, they enjoyed panoramic views of Chongqing’s skyline, which beautifully blends the old and new.

Chongqing Travel Tips: 1) Chongqing is a big city and often overlooked as a tourist destination. There are some interesting places to see within Chongqing itself and also day trips. The highlights of Chongqing include Ciqikou Ancient Town, E’ling Park, Three Gorges Museum... 2) If you have more time enough, like one or two days, for culture lovers, it is highly recommended to spend one day visiting Chongqing Dazu Rock Carvings; for nature lovers, you’d better spend two days exploring Wulong Karst Landscape to immerse in the incredible nature wonderland.

Day 7: Chengdu (Panda Base and Downtown)

Josh and his mother’s time in Chengdu was filled with cultural immersion. At the Panda Base, they enjoyed watching the playful antics of the giant pandas, an experience hailed as an absolute must-see in this hometown of pandas.

Strolling through Jinli Old Street, they explored local shops and tried traditional snacks. A relaxing afternoon at People’s Park allowed them to experience the leisurely Chengdu lifestyle by sipping tea and watching locals play mahjong and dance.

Chengdu Travel Tips: 1) You can add more fun and leisure experience into your trip, like enjoy a cup of tea in local traditional tea house and watch Sichuan opera in Shufengyayun Opera House. 2) It’s better to spend 2 to 3 days in Chengdu. To extend your Chengdu trip, you can take side trips to the following World Heritage Sites - Leshan Giant Buddha & Mount Emei for 2 days, Dujiangyan & Mount Qingcheng for 1-2 days, Jiuzhaigou Valley & Huanglong Valley for 3 days.

Day 8~9: Leshan (Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei)

Their journey continued to Leshan, where they marveled at the colossal Giant Buddha carved into the cliffside. Josh and his mother were struck by the sheer scale and artistry of the statue, a testament to ancient craftsmanship and faith.

At Mount Emei, they embraced the tranquility of the sacred Buddhist mountain. The lush greenery, serene temples, and breathtaking views provided the perfect ending to their trip.

Leshan Emei Travel Tips: 1) Leshan Giant Buddha is located about 2 hours’ driving from downtown Chengdu. Most tourists choose to travel Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei together from Chengdu. 2) You’re suggested to make a Buddha boat tour within half a day, if your schedule is tight and you plan to visit Mount Emei in the afternoon. You can also choose to hike if there are less visitors and you get to the scenic area very early. 3) When time permits, you may have an in-depth exploration of Leshan Giant Buddha. Extended Mount Emei tours usually takes about 1 to 2 days.
