Shigatse Transportation Overview

Apart from Lhasa, Shigatse is the most popular place among the tourists and enjoys amazing Mt. Everest and three influential monasteries (Tashilhunpo Monastery, Sayka Monastery, Palcho Monastery). Plus its status of a key gate with to the southern and western Tibet, Shigatse becomes an important center of Tibet. Tourist could get to Shigatse by flight, by train or road.

By Flight

Nowadays, it is available to get to Shigatse by flight. So far only one city connects with Shigatse by air – Chengdu. If you want to fly straight to Shigatse, you have to get to Chengdu by domestic flight or international flight. There is one daily flight running between Chengdu and Shigatse usually. Within 3 hours, you can get to Shigatse directly. When the off-season takes place, the flight might be cancelled. Feel free to contact us for the up-dated information.

Shigatse Peace Airport

Shigatse Peace Airport is located Jiangdang Town along the 318 National Highway. It is about 43km away from Shigatse city.

Most tourists choose Lhasa as their first destination of Tibet and then travel to Shigatse by train after their Lhasa Tour. The Lhasa-Shigatse Railway Station was completed on 22nd, July, 2014, which cut down travel length of travel between Lhasa and Shigatse to less than 3 hours.

By Road

Shigatse is the transportation center on road from which you can travel to Lhasa, Ngari, Gyantse, Mount Everest, Zhangmu, etc. China-Nepal Friendship Highway and Shigatse-Yadong Highway are two most important road transfer route through Shigatse.

There are two routes between Shigatse and Lhasa. Route A is the old one that can be described as a sightseeing road because it passes by Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse city. It takes about 8 hours going route A. Route B is newly built, and passes by Qushui, Nimu, etc. It takes only five and a half hours to get to Shigatse from Lhasa by route B.
