Day 3 Shanghai & Flight to Yichang ( B, L )
After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel. First, you’ll pay a wonderful visit to Jade Buddha Temple, the site of the largest Jade Buddha in the world and numerous religious artifacts, ancient statues and Buddhist scriptures. This peaceful kingdom of Buddhism hidden among modern blocks and dominating mansions is a great place for a nice break in this very busy city.
Next, you’ll be transferred to Tianzifang which is touristic arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated traditional residential area. It is the typical tourist attraction to appreciate the preservation of local Shikumen architecture. In this place full of rich flavor of life, you can leisurely stroll along the clean old alleys to watch the daily life of local Shanghai people, savor a cup of drink at the open-air café, and find some interesting things in the novel shops to feel the international feature mixed with real Shanghai culture.
In
the afternoon, your guide will escort you to the airport for your flight to
Yichang (2hrs). Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to Yichang Three Gorges Center Cruise
Terminal (or Yichang East Railway Station)
for a bus arranged by the cruise company heading to Maoping Port for embarkation. Your lifetime Yangtze River cruise
starts!
More notes and tips regarding today’s embarkation:
- 1. The Shanghai to Yichang flight in the afternoon is not always available every day. If there is no such flight, to embark your cruise ship on time, you will have to cancel your visit to Jade Buddha Temple and Tianzifang in Shanghai and change your transfer to Yichang with 2 optional arrangements. (a). Take the early morning flight (around 7:30 a.m.) to Yichang to have a half-day tour. After the city tour, your guide would escort you to take the arranged bus to the port for Yangtze River cruise embarkation; (b). Take a morning bullet train (about 6-7 hours) from Shanghai to Yichang, and after arrival, take the arranged bus to the port for Yangtze River cruise embarkation.
- 2. All the cruise companies will arrange free transfer service at Yichang Three Gorges Center Cruise Terminal or Yichang East Railway Station during 17:30~20:00. Onboard, you will enjoy different kinds of activities, like practicing Tai Chi on the boat’s sundeck, drinking a relaxing morning coffee, attending a Yangtze River history and culture lecture, or participating in the Captain’s Welcome Party and evening shows.
Today’s highlight is an afternoon excursion to Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower project, located at the middle of Xiling Gorge near Yichang. You will marvel at this gigantic dam from different angles, learn more about the background history of the Three Gorges Dam Project and enjoy the beautiful surrounding landscape and scenery. If you like, you can take an optional experience to sail through the Three Gorges Dam Ship Lift, the largest and the most sophisticated ship lift in the world, which takes only 40 minutes with fresh insight into the dam project.
An Optional Excursion: Take a shore excursion to the Tribe of Three Gorges in the Xiling Gorge, which charges an extra fee. It has lovely scenes everywhere - waterfalls, boats, fishermen, laundry girls washing in the stream, a mock wedding ceremony… Take a leisurely stroll on the boardwalk in the valley to admire the breathtaking scenery and learn about the life and traditions of the Bai people in this region.
More notes and tips regarding today’s itinerary:
- 1. Different cruise companies may provide various options for shore excursions. The attractions mentioned above are based on common and frequent situations. If you have specific sites or attractions you are interested in, feel free to tell your travel consultant. They will help you find the most suitable cruise.
- 2. Three Gorges Ship Lift: During the peak season, the ship lift operation is in full swing. There is an imbalance between supply and demand, leading to a large influx of people from various ships. Sometimes, you may not be able to find a seat and may have to stand. If you are worried about how the crowds might affect your experience, it is advisable to think carefully before joining the program.
- 3. Yangtze Explorer, the top luxury Yangtze River Cruise ship offering one-to-one service, arranged an exclusive shore excursion to Shennongjia Natural Reserve - a mysterious UNESCO Natural Heritage Site in Central China today. So, the Three Gorges Dam would be excluded from Yangtze Explorer’s upstream itinerary.

Day 5 Yangtze River Cruise (B, L, D)
Today, you will sail through the essential section of the Yangtze River - Three Gorges! You shall relax on the sun deck and soak up the breathtaking gorge scenery passing by as you drift through Qutang Gorge and Wu Gorge. While the ship cruises toward the mouth of the Gorges, especially at Kui Gate, you’ll hear the wind whistling fiercely and witness the rolling hills stretching towards the skyline, leaving you marvelling at nature’s ingenious workmanship.
Today’s shore excursions would mainly be arranged at counties along the Three Gorges, for instance, Badong, Wuxian or Fengjie. Different cruise companies draw up different itineraries. But in general, most luxury Yangtze River cruise companies, such as Century Cruises, Victoria Cruises and Yangtze Gold Cruises, etc., would cover a small boat drifting shore excursion, taking guests deep into the primitive and picturesque tributaries of the Three Gorges, where guests will have close-up views of high mountain peaks and hanging coffins on the steep cliff faces. Besides, you will be entertained with local music and dance offered by the Tujia ethnic minority during this side trip. Shennv Stream, Shennong Stream and the Lesser Three Gorges are the top chosen ones.
In the afternoon, most ships will port in Fengjie, which is famous for the historical and cultural background of the “City of Poetry”, White Emperor City, as well as the natural beauty of the Kui Gate. It is the most magnificent and representative landscape of the Qutang Gorge, and it’s even featured on the background of the CNY 10 Note. Some cruise companies offer the White Emperor City as an included shore excursion, while others offer it as an optional one, which means you need to pay an extra fee to join the group sightseeing.
More notes and tips regarding today’s itinerary:
- 1. Even sailing the same route through the Three Gorges, different ships would have different shore excursion arrangements. The sites abovementioned refer to common and most frequent situations. If you have specific sites or attractions in mind, please let your travel consultant know when you inquire.
- 2. Besides the shore excursions mentioned above, 2 newly popular sites selected by cruise companies have gained high recognition from guests: Three Gorges Summit and Goddess Sky Road. Both are constructed on mountaintops for customers to enjoy the panoramic view of the natural splendor!.
- 3. Located at the entrance of Qutang Gorge, the observation platform at White Emperor City offers the best view of the magnificent Kuimen Gate. Do remember to take a CNY 10 note for a selfie!

Day 6 Yangtze River Cruise (B, L, D)
This morning, you will follow a local guide on a shore excursion in Fengdu County. Fengdu County, a vital part of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, boosts unique natural and cultural landscape, including Fengdu Ghost City, Mount Shuanggui, Snow Jade Cave, Jade Emperor Scenic Area, Xiaoguanshan Folk Residences, etc. Out of all these sites, Fengdu Ghost City is the most famous and attractive. It is filled with mysterious tales of the underworld, brutal tortures, and various types of demons and Chinese devils. Entering this ghost city, you will find many statues of demons and vivid scenes of their perfidious activities. (Notice: Some cruise companies arrange the site visit as an included, and others classify it as optional, which requires extra payment; you may check with your travel consultant while booking.)
In addition, Mount Shuanggui and Snow Jade Cave are two other commonly chosen shore excursions for Yangtze River Cruises. Shuanggui Mountain is a lush mountain in China with breathtaking views and delightful sounds of nature, offering a rich, literal cultural experience. Snow Jade Cave is a relatively young but continuously growing karst cave in China. 80% of the stalactites in the cave are as white as snow, naturally formed into various shapes. Different cruise companies organize shore excursions accordingly.
Enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Party with all the mates onboard this evening and cherish your last night on the relaxing Yangtze River cruise.
More notes and tips regarding today’s itinerary:
- 1. Physical demands and dressing tips: Comfortable shoes are recommended as there will be a lot of walking at Fengdu Ghost City and many stairs to climb at Shibaozhai Pagoda.
- 2. Shore excursion to Shibaozhai Pagoda, Zhongxian: In 2024, there are still Yangtze Cruise ships that provide onshore visits to Shibaozhai Pagoda. A gem of Chinese architecture, this 12-story, 18th-century red wooden temple on the northern bank of the Yangtze River is an architectural delight full of legends and beautiful stories. You can ask your travel consultant for advice on finding a cruise that includes a visit to Shibaozhai Pagoda!

After breakfast, drive about 40 km to discover one of the greatest man-made wonders in the world - the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, built by the first emperor of China Qin Shihuang to protect him in his afterlife. Over 8,000 life-size warriors, horses and chariots, buried in 3 pits for more than 2,000 years until uncovered by a local farmer in 1974, form an ancient military army with complete battle units of infantry, cavalry, etc. Standing in front of these figures, one can’t help being amazed not only by the ambition of Emperor Qin Shihuang but also by the fabulous artistic skills of ancient Chinese artisans. After breakfast, start today's tour with an educational visit to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi’an Museum to learn a lot about the history and culture about the ancient city of Xi’an. They are together located in a clean and beautiful park. The Small Wild Goose Pagoda is rather smaller and 55 years younger than its “sister” - the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Built during 707 to 709 AD, the pagoda is 43.4 meters tall with 13 tiers (originally 15 tiers), looking like a very tall rectangular pyramid. You can walk around to appreciate the beautiful design and take photos of the pagoda. Then you will go to visit Xi’an Museum which is only several minutes’ walking from the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. This museum has more than 130,000 pieces of jade relics, seals, paintings, porcelains, Buddhist statues, stone carvings and many other precious relics.
Later, go to spend a leisure time on the Ancient City Wall, the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China. Just like the merchants and envoys on the Silk Road thousands of years ago, you will enter the interior of the city walls through the Hanguang Gate. There you will visit a mini museum to see the real Tang Dynasty city wall ruins from over 1400 years ago, including gateways, cross-sections of the wall, and the remains of water channels. After the museum visit, get up to the city wall to enjoy a leisure stroll and pleasant panoramic views of modern Xian. Practical Info about Traveling with Us
Restaurant & Food
Vegetarian food Requirement
Vegetarian food in Chinese cuisine culture is usually divided into 3 categories: the Monastery
Vegetarian
Food, the Court Vegetarian Food and the Folk Vegetarian Food. And the main ingredients are:
soybean,
taro powder, mushrooms, fresh vegetables and tofu (bean curd). It will be easier to find the
vegetarian
restaurants in big cities of china, such as: Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, HK, etc.
If allergic to some food
We suggest you to list any food or ingredients that you are allergic to and let our travel
consultant
know. Then your travel consultant will mark them in the guide’s itinerary, so that our guides
in
different cities can make some preparations and arrangements in advance.
Do our guide and driver join the meal with us?
The tour guides and driver will be at the same restaurants with you, but they will only join the
meal
when you invite. Sometimes the drivers are shy to join as they usually eat fast and could not
understand
English talk around the table, so the guide will be with you more often.
Will we be able to try some local foods during our visit?
Yes, you will. There will be some meals excluded in your itinerary as you like, and your private
guide
will be delighted to give you some suggestions and take you to the local restaurants, if you

How to bargain?
Bargains are not acceptable in big supermarkets and department stores. But in some night markets
or tourist
shops, you can bargain for a lower price, since the vendors always ask for very high price for
a
certain item. You’d better ask the opinion of the guide first, and then the guide will tell you
the
real value and quality of the item. Please note that when the bargain is processing, the guide
will
be hesitate to help as it may annoy the bosses. Just try to let the guides know you will
bargain
in advance.
What to do with persistent vendors?
If you do not need something from them, just do not ask for price. Some of the venders are very
persisted,
and if they keep selling things to you, you can simply say “No, thanks.” (Chinese
pronunciation:
”Bu, XieXie”). If they do not give up, you just keep silence. Silence is sometimes useful to
handle
this situation.

- 1. If you think you have no desire or interest, you do not feel embarrassed to let our
guide know
DIRECTLY (since some of our guides are enthusiastic in taking you shopping)
