Longmen Grottoes is situated in Longmen Town, Luolong District, about 15 km (30 minutes’ drive) to the south of Luoyang downtown. Many buses in the city can take you to this famous site, but it is a little time-consuming. Get from Luoyang to Longmen Grottoes

To get to Longmen Grottoes, you need to get to Luoyang first. Luoyang is well connected with many cities in China by high speed train such as Beijing (4-4.5h), Xi’an (1.5h), Wuhan (3h), Zhengzhou (40 min), Kaifeng (1h), etc. You can also fly there from Beijing (2h), Shanghai (2-2.5h), Chengdu (2h), Chongqing (1.5h), Guangzhou (2.5h), Shenzhen (2.5h) and so on. Get from Luoyang Downtown to Longmen Grottoes

As the icon of Luoyang City, Longmen Grottoes can be easily reached from Luoyang downtown (Wangcheng Park). This 15 km trip usually needs 30 minutes by car. You can also take a bus to get there in about 1.5 hours.

Get from Luoyang Longmen Railway Station to Longmen Grottoes

Luoyang Longmen Railway Station is a high-speed rail station. It is only 5 km (15 minutes’ drive) to the north of Longmen Grottoes. Independent travellers can take a taxi there. Direct buses are also available but it will take about 50 minutes. If you get to Luoyang by high-speed train in the morning or early afternoon, it is convenient to visit Longmen Grottoes directly after you get off the train.

Get from Luoyang Railway Station to Longmen Grottoes

Luoyang Railway Station is for normal trains. It is in Luoyang downtown, about 16 km (40 minutes’ drive) from Longmen Grottoes. You can take a direct bus to get there and the duration is about 1.5 hours. If you want to save more time, taxis are also easy to find in that area.

Get from Luoyang Beijiao Airport to Longmen Grottoes

Luoyang Beijiao Airport is in the northern suburb of Luoyang City while Longmen Grottoes is in the south. So they are a little far with a distance of about 26 km (45 minutes’ drive). Taking a bus will take a long time of nearly 2.5 hours because no direct bus is available. So you are more recommended to take a taxi or charter a car to get there.

Get from Shaolin Temple to Longmen Grottoes

Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple are two top attractions in Henan Province. Actually, many people come to Henan just for these two sites. Shaolin Temple is in Dengfeng City, about 55 km, 1.5 hours’ drive from Longmen Grottoes. There are no high-speed trains or direct bus connected. Independent travellers need to get to Dengfeng Coach Station first (16 km, 40 min by car, 2h by bus), take a coach to Luoyang downtown (about 2h), and then take a bus or taxi to Longmen Grottoes.

Get from Zhengzhou to Longmen Grottoes

Zhengzhou is only about 140 km (2.5 hours’ drive) to the east of Longmen Grottoes. You need to get to Luoyang from Zhengzhou first and there are multiple choices: high speed train (40 min) normal trains (1.5h), or long distance bus (2-3.5h). You can take high speed trains or normal trains from Zhengzhou East Railway Station or Zhengzhou Railway Station to Luoyang Railway Station or Luoyang Longmen Railway Station. There are about 120 trains running between these two cities. Then take a bus or taxi to Longmen Grottoes from the train stations.

Get from Xian to Luoyang Grottoes

Xian is about 390 km (5 hours’ drive) to the west of Longmen Grottoes. High speed train is the most recommended because it is fast, which only needs 1.5h, and Luoyang Longmen Railway Station is close to the grottoes, while normal trains need 4.5-6.5 hours and it needs more time to transfer from Luoyang Railway Station in downtown to Longmen Grottoes.
