Changbaishan (or Changbai Mountain), literally meaning ever-white mountain, is an inspiring site on the border of China and North Korea. Its unique volcanic landform, brilliant snow landscape and mysterious legend of Tianchi Lake attract many travelers. Before traveling to Changbai Mountain, you need to know that the scenic area of Changbai Mountain is divided into four independent parts, including North Slope, West Slope, South Slope and East Slope. The former three parts are located in China while the East Slope is located in North Korea.

Where is Changbai Mountain?

Changbai Mountain is a major mountain range extending from northeast Chinese provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang and Liaoning to North Korea. The entrance of North Slope is located in Erdao Baihe Town, Antu County, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province (吉林省延边朝鲜族自治州安图县二道白河镇), the entrance of West Slope is located in Sonjianghe Town, Fusong County, Baishan City, Jinin Province (吉林省白山市抚松县松江河镇), and the entrance of the South Slope is located in Chinan District, Changbai County, Baishan City, Jinin Province (吉林省白山市长白县池南区). North Slope is the essence of Changbai Mountain, and its tourist base - Erdao Baihe Town is 330 km (about 4 hours’ drive) away from Jilin City, 330 km (about 4.5 hours’ drive) away from Changchun and 560 km (about 7 hours’ drive) away from Harbin.

Baishan Changbaishan Airport provides travelers with a quick access to Changbai Mountain. It receives direct flights from nearby cities and some big cities, such as Changchun (1 hour), Tianjin (2 hours), Harbin (1 hour), Beijing (2 hours), Shanghai (2.5~5 hours), Xian (3 hours) and Hangzhou (5 hours).

Yanji Chaoyangchuan International Airport (延吉朝阳川国际机场IATA: YNG, ICAO: ZYYJ)

Compared with Baishan Changbai Airport, Yanji Chaoyangchuan Airport is a little far from Changbai Mountain, but it receivers more flights from a bit more cities Chengdu, Guangzhou, Qingdao Shenzhen, etc., as well as several international flights from Seoul, Daegu and Gimhae. There is no public transportation means available to take you the scenic areas, and you need to charter a car.

It is easy to take a flight to Harbin Taiping International Airport from international cities like Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Moscow, Phuket Island, etc., and many domestic cities like Beijing (2 hrs), Shanghai (3 hrs), Xian (3 hrs), Chengdu (3.5-4 hrs), Hangzhou (3 hrs), Guangzhou (4-4.5 hrs), Xiamen (4-4.5hrs), Wuhan (3-3.5 hrs), Dalian (1.5 hrs), Qingdao (2 hrs), Jinan (2 hrs), Ordos (2.5 hrs), Sanya (5 hrs), etc. Besides, you can fly to Changchun Longjia International Airport from some international flights from Seoul and Frankfurt, as well as many domestic flights from Beijing (2 hrs), Shanghai (3 hrs), Xian (3.5 hrs), Nanjing (2.5 hrs), Changsha (3.5 hrs), Chengdu (3.5 hrs), Chongqing (3.5 hrs), Xiamen (4 hrs), Guangzhou (6.5 hrs), etc.

Trains to Changbai Mountain

Since the Dunhua-Changbaishan High Speed Train operated at the end of 2021, it becomes more convenient to reach Changbai Mountain. Changbaishan Railway Station is just located near Erdao Baihe Town, about 40 minutes’ drive to the North Gate of Changbai Mountain and about 1 hour 40 minutes’ drive to West Gate of Changbai Mountain. Currently, it is take a train to Changbaishan from Jilin (about 1.5 hours), Changchun (about 2.5 hours), Beijing (7.5 hours), Dalian (about 6 hours), Shenyang (5 hours), Harbin (4 hours)

Get to Changbaishan from the Best Gateway Cities

It is quite popular to travel Changbai Mountain from Jilin, Yanji, Changchun, Harbin and Beijing.

Get from Jilin to Changbaishan

Distance: 360 km between Jilin and North Slope, 340 km between Jilin and West Slope

Jilin to Changbaishan Drive: Many travelers plan a tour combing Jilin and Changbai Mountain together. They usually drive to Changbai Mountain directly after the enjoy the beautiful Jilin Rime in Wusong Island. It needs about 4 hours to drive to West Gate, or 4.5~5 hours to drive to North Gate from Jilin City.

Jilin to Changbaishan Train: There are about 10 daily high speed trains running from Jilin Railway Station to Changbaishan Railway Station, with a duration of only 1.5 hours.

Get from Yanji to Changbaishan

Distance: 170 km between Yanji and North Slope, 240 km between Yanji and West Slope

There is no available train running to Changbai Mountain, and you need to take a coach or use a private car to get to the different North Slope or West Slope. Generally, it takes about 2.5 hours to reach North Slope or about 3.5 hours to reach West Slope from Yanji.

Get from Changchun to Changbai Mountain

Distance: 460 km between Changchun and North Slope 5 hours, 310 km between Changchun and West Slope 3.5 hours

Changchun is the capital city and transfer hub of Jilin Province. For travelers in Changchun, you can travel to Changbai Mountain by flight, by train. The bus is not recommended because of the long distance.

Changchun to Changbaishan Flights: Changchun to Changbaishan Flights: There is one daily nonstop flight from Changchun Longjia Airport to Baishan Changbaishan Airport in the morning. The whole trip takes about 1 hour.

Changchun to Changbaishan Trains: Changchun Railway Station operates about 25 high speed trains running from Changchun Railway Station to Changbaishan Railway Station everyday .The whole trip is 2.5 ~ 3 hours long.

Get from Harbin to Changbaishan

Distance: 590 km

Harbin to Changbaishan Flights: There are three weekly flights from Harbin to Changbaishan. Generally, it operates in the evening time (around 19:10) of Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with a duration of about 1 hour.

Harbin to Changbaishan Trains: From Both Harbin Railway Station and Harbin West Railway Station, you can take one daily high speed train to Changbaishan Railway Station. It needs about 5 hours to get to Dunhua.

Harbin to Changbaishan Drive: In fact, it is popular to drive from Harbin to Changbai Mountain directly and there are many worth-visiting attractions on the road, such as China Snow Town and Jingpo Lake.

Get from Beijing to Changbaishan

Distance: 1200 km

Beijing is a top tourist destination as well as a transfer hub in China. It can be reached by many international flights and domestic flights. You can take a flight or a high speed train to Changbai Mountain.

Beijing to Changbaishan Flights: Beijing Daxing Airport operates 2 flights to Baishan Changbaishan Airport every week (usually on Tuesday and Saturday), and the whole flight journey cost about 2 hours. If you fail to book a flight to Baishan Changbaishan Airport, it is also available to take a flight to Yanji Chaoyangchuan Airport. There are 2 daily flights from Beijing Capital Airport and 1 daily flight from Beijing Daxing Airport to Yanji Chaoyangchuan Airport. The flying time is within 2.5 hours.

Beijing to Changbai Trains: Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station sends 1 daily high speed train to Changbaishan Railway Station, which takes about 7.5 hours.

Get around Changbai Mountain

Baishan Changbaibaishan Airport to Changbai Mountain Transfer

Changbaishan Airport to Changbai Mountain North Slope: The distance between Changbaishan Airport and North Slope is about 110 km. There is no buse available, and you have to charter a car which takes about 2 hours. If you arrive at the airport in the evening or at night, you can get to Erdao Baihe Town first, and visit North Slope the next day. Erdao Baihe Town is about 80 km (1 hour’s drive) away from the airport and 35 km (about 45 minutes’ drive) from North Slope.

Changbaishan Airport to Changbai Mountain West Slope: Baishan Changbaishan Airport and the entrance of West Slope are both located in Sonjianghe Town. The distance between them is only 19 km, and you can take a shuttle bus to the entrance from the airport within 30 minutes.

Wanda Changbaishan International Resort to Changbai Mountain

Wanda Changbai International Resort is a wonderful resort for accommodation, food and skiing. It is 18 km Changbaishan Airport, 12 km (about 15 minutes’ drvie) to West Slope and 120 km (2.5 hours’ drive) to North Slope. There are free shuttle buses between the resort and the airport. However, private transfer is the only way if you want to go to North Slope, West Slope or South Slope.

Transfer Among Three Slopes of Changbai Mountain

For travelers who want to enjoy a better Changbai Mountain experience, only visiting one slope is not enough. Erdao Baihe Town operates daily buses to North Slope and West Slope. Private transfer is necessary to get to South Slope.

Generally, a classic Changbai Mountain tour needs at least 3 days including arrival and departure days. Many travelers spend 1 day visiting North Slope or West Slope, and half a day traveling Mojie Scenic Area. And some travelers wanting to see Heavenly Lake may spend 2 days visiting both slopes.
