The History of Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kung Fu
With a rich history spanning 1500 years, the Shaolin Temple was established by the Xiaowen Emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD) in 495 AD to serve as a sanctuary for Bodhidharma, a revered monk from India. Just 32 years later, another renowned Indian monk, Bodhidharma, arrived at the temple to spread the teachings of Zen Buddhism. During his time there, Bodhidharma famously meditated in a cave near the temple, developing a series of movements that are believed to be the precursor to Kung Fu or Martial Arts.
Over time, successive generations of monks at Shaolin Temple refined and expanded upon these techniques, eventually culminating in the comprehensive system of Shaolin Kung Fu. Notably, during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the martial monks of Shaolin Temple played a crucial role in aiding Emperor Li Shimin's army in defeating enemy forces. Later, during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Shaolin Temple dispatched martial monks to the southeastern coastal areas to combat Japanese pirates.
Today, Shaolin Temple remains a revered destination for both enthusiasts of Kung Fu and devout Buddhist pilgrims alike, embodying a harmonious blend of martial arts tradition and spiritual heritage.

Shaolin Temple is open to tourists, but you need a valid health code to enter the scenic area.
Good afternoon from China. As for your questions: 1. You need to obtain a Chinese Tourist Visa (L) as well as valid passport when visiting Shaolin Temple; 2. There is no direct flight between New York and Zhengzhou (where Shaolin Temple located), and you’d better first arrive in Beijing or Shanghai and then transfer to Zhengzhou; 3. There are usually two ways attend the training class - one is in Shaolin Temple Scenic Area which is taught by the real Shaolin monks, and the second is training school close to the scenic area organized by the well-known masters. Our guests can attend both and if they want to have a little try about Kung Fu, they would attend the private training class taught by the master, and if you want long-term training, they would learn in Shaolin Temple Scenic Area.
