Where is Chengde

Chengde City (115° 54'- 119° 15'E, 40° 12'- 42° 37'N) is situated northeast of Beijing. It borders Zhangjiakou (in Hebei Province) to the west, and Tianjin to the south, Tangshan and Qinhuangdao to the southeast. It’s about 225km to Beijing, 300km to Tianjin, 515km to Shijiazhuang.

Chengde Puning Airport 承德普宁机场 (IATA: CDE)

Address: East side of Dongnan Shanzhong street, Shuangqiao District, Chengde City, Hebei Province 河北省承德市双桥区东南山中街东侧

Transportation: about 28 km (0.5-1 hour by car) to Chengde downtown (Imperial Summer Palace), 105 km (1.5-2 hours by car) to Jinshanling Great Wall.

Chengde Puning Airport (承德普宁机场) is now the only airport in operation in Chengde. It has been under operation since 2017. As of 2020, the airport opens 7 domestic airlines. You can take flights transferring between Chengde and domestic cities like Shijiazhuang (1h), Shanghai (4.5h), Xian (2h), Tianjin (1h), Guangzhou (5h), etc. No direct flight serves between Beijing and Chengde for the short aerial distance.

• Chengde Airport to Chengde Downtown (Imperial Summer Resort): Besides taking a taxi to Chengde downtown, you can also take the airport shuttle bus No. 1 to Huoshengmiao stop (火神庙) which is only about 500m from the Imperial Summer Resort with a duration of about 1.5 hours and the bus fare is about CNY 10 per person.

• Chengde Airport to Jinshanling Great Wall: there is not any public transferring way from Chengde airport to Jinshanling Great Wall directly, you can only charter a car and driver for about 105km, 2 hours to get to Jinshanling.

There are totally 4 railway stations serving Chengde and Chengde South Railway Station and Chengde Railway Station are two major stations. Chengde South Railway Station is the high-speed train station and Chengde Railway Station is the older one located in the downtown area. Chengde Railway Station is the major train station that serves most bullet trains passing Chengde. It operates trains to cities such as Beijing (1h), Shijiazhuang (2.5h), Dalian (4.5 hours), Shenyang (2.5 hours), Liaoning Chaoyang (1-1.5 hours), Pingquan North (30 minutes), etc.

Transportation: Chengde South Railway Station is only about 9km to Chengde's downtown area and about 14km to the Imperial Summer Palace of Mountain Resort. You can easily get to the Imperial Summer Resort by taxi (about 30min) or Bus 68, 69, etc.

Chengde Railway Station is an old rail station serving normal trains passing Chengde. It connects many nearby cities like Beijing (3.5-9.5h), Shijiazhuang (9.5-10.5h), Changping North (9.5h), Tongzhou West (4.5-7h), Xinglong County (2-3.5h), Pingquan (0.5-2.5h), Tongliao of Inner Mongolia (10h), Handan of Hebei (11.5h), etc.

Get to Chengde by Bus

It is very convenient to take a bus to Chengde in Heibei Province. There are many buses to Chengde from provincial and nearby cities like Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, etc. At present, there are 3 bus stations in Chengde, namely Chengde East Bus station and the Chengde North Bus station, and Chengde West Bus Station. Get from Beijing to Chengde

Beijing is located 225 km to the southwest of Chengde. With direct high-speed trains and buses, tourists can travel between these two cities conveniently.

By High-Speed Train: Every day, over 50 high-speed trains depart from Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station to Chengde South Railway Station with a duration of 1 hour.

By Normal Train: Multiple trains leave from Beijing Railway Station to Chengde Railway Station with a duration of 3.5-9.5 hours.

By Private Car: It's the most recommended way to visit Chengde from Beijing and it only takes about 3 hours by car. You can drive to the famous Jinshanling Great Wall along your way to Chengde.

By Bus: over 50 buses are running between the two cities every day. It takes about 4-5 hours by bus from Sihui Bus Station/Liuliqiao Bus Station in Beijing to Chengde East Bus Station.

Get from Tianjin to Chengde

As a popular coastal city near Chengde, Tianjin is only about 300km from Chengde. People always travel to Tian from Chengde conveniently by air and road. The high-speed train has not been put into use between the two cities yet.

By Flight: Every evening, there is a flight taking off from Tianjin Binhai Airport to Chengde Puning Airport with a duration of 1 hour on the flight. As the airports in Tianjin and Chengde are a little far from downtown, the total time you need is much the same as a bus trip.

By Private Car: It takes about 3.5 hours by car. A private car is also an option and doesn’t take a long time or you can easily take a bus or taxi to Chengde from Tianjin.

By Bus: About 4 buses are running between the two cities every day. It takes about 4 hours by bus from Tianjin Tongsa Bus Station/Binhai Tanggu Bus Station in Tianjin to Chengde. The bus fare is about CNY 120 per person.

Get from Shanghai to Chengde

Shanghai is about 1365 km to Chengde. There is no direct trains from Shanghai to Chengde and taking a car or bus is not recommended for the long distance and traveling by flight is more recommended.

By Flight: There are few stopover flights from Shanghai Hongqiao Internation Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Chengde Airport with a duration of about 4.5 hours on the flight. Please be noted that you are advised to set aside 2 hours for security check and boarding.

Get from Shijiazhuang to Chengde

Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei Province, is about 515km away from Chengde. You can take a train, bus, flight to get there. The frequent high-speed trains can be very convenient.

By High-Speed Train: By the end of 2020, there will be high-speed trains connecting Shijiazhuang Railway Station and Chengde South Railway Station with a duration of 2.5 hours.

By Normal Train: Every day, about 4 K/Y trains depart from Shijiazhuang Railway Station to Chengde Railway Station with the duration of 7-10 hours.

By Flight: Every day, 6 flights are taking off from Shijiazhuang Zhengding Airport to Chengde Puning Airport with a duration of 1 hour on the flight. As the airports in Shijiazhuang and Chengde are a little far from downtown, the total time you need is much the same as taking a high-speed train.

By Bus: It takes about 6.5-7 hours to reach Chengde from Shijiazhuang by bus. There are 3 buses a day running between Shijiazhuang Bus Terminal Station to Chengde East Bus Station from about 09:30 am to 2:30 pm. The bus fare is about CNY 160 per person.

▶ City Bus: The city bus in Chengde city is very convenient, with many lines. The price of the most one-way ticket in Chengde is CNY 1 per person. There are bus stops in various tourist attractions in Chengde. During rush hours, the buses will be very crowded. There are also a few double-deck sightseeing buses in Chengde, with the ticket price of CNY 2 per person.

▶ Taxi: It's very convenient to take a taxi in Chengde City. The starting fare of a taxi in the daytime is CNY 7 within 2 kilometers, 1.4 yuan per kilometer for every another extra kilometer, and CNY 1.6 per kilometer for driving more than 8 kilometers. During the night time (23:00-5:30), an extra CNY 0.2 will be charged for every kilometer driving at nighttime.

▶ How to Get to Chengde Mountain Resort: Chengde Imperial Summer Mountain Resort is located in the city center area in Chengde. It's only about 3 km away from Chengde Railway Station, 14km from Chengde South Railway Station, 27km from Chengde airport. It's easily accessible by taxi and can be reached by bus No. 5, 6, 15, 11, etc.

▶ How to Get to Jinshanling Great Wall: Jinshanling Great Wall is about 154km from Beijing downtown and 97km from Chengde City. Tourists can take a taxi or private car to reach Jinshanling Great Wall from Chengde and it takes about 1.5 ~ 2 hours to get to Jinshanling and no bus can get there from Chengde directly. ▶ How to Get to Bashang Grassland: The picturesque Bashang Grassland (including Fengning Bashang Grassland, Zhangbei Bashang Grassland, and Mulan Paddock) is far away from the Chengde downtown area. Since there is no tourist bus inside the vast scenic area, the only recommended way to get there is charting a private car. Mulan Paddock is about 200 km (3 hours’ drive) from Chengde downtown. Fengning Bashang is about 240 km (3 hours’ drive) from Chengde downtown, 280 km (4.5 hours’ drive) from Beijing.
