Why Visit Qingyan Ancient Town?

Rich Historical Significance

With a history dating back over 600 years, Qingyan Ancient Town was originally built as a military stronghold to garrison troops during the Ming Dynasty (1368~1644). Surrounded by moats, mountains, and sturdy fortresses, the town was featured four main gates (East, West, South, and North), and further protected by high city walls capable of withstanding firearms, bows, and arrows. This design made it easy to defend and difficult to attack. Qingyan Ancient Town once served as a base in 1459 for suppressing the uprising led by Miao chieftain Gan Bazhu (干把猪). The "永镇边夷" (Eternal Pacification of the Frontier) cliff inscription remains as a testament to this campaign. With its scientific layout, robust walls, flexible street design, and complex road network, Qingyan Ancient Town stands as a remarkable example of a settlement with both military and cultural significance.

Vibrant Cultural Heritage

In its heyday, Qingyan Ancient Town was a thriving center of culture and intellect, serving as a melting pot of ideas and traditions. The town was home to renowned scholars, such as Zhao Yijiong (赵以炯), the first Number One Scholar in imperial examinations from Guizhou, whose legacy is preserved in the Zhuangyuan Mansion. Qingyan's vibrant intellectual and cultural environment was further enriched by its Confucian academies, temples, and ancestral halls, which became gathering places for learning and exchange. The town's unique blend of Han Chinese and local ethnic cultures also contributed to its reputation as a place of diversity and creativity.

Unique Coexistence of Religions

One of the unique features of Qingyan Ancient Town is its harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, and Christianity, known as "Four Religions in One". In addition to traditional Chinese Taoist temples and Buddhist monasteries, the town is also home to a Christian church and a Catholic church, reflecting its openness and inclusiveness. The Wanshou Palace represents Taoist culture, while Ciyun Temple and Longquan Temple showcase the town's deep-rooted Buddhist heritage. The presence of the Christian church and Catholic church highlights the influence of Western missionaries. It offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the historical interplay of diverse beliefs and traditions.

Qingyan Ancient Town Attractions

Qingyan Ancient Town features 4 main streets and 26 smaller alleys, lined with a variety of ancient structures, including pavilions, towers, temples, shrines, palaces, ancestral halls, pagodas, and courtyards.

Bei Street (背街)

Back Street is one of the most distinctive and picturesque stone alleys in Qingyan Ancient Town. It gained fame as a filming location for the movie "The Missing Gun" (《寻枪》). The alley's bluestone pavement, polished smooth over centuries, now gleams like a mirror, reflecting a deep, serene blue-black hue. The street is lined with layered slate walls, meticulously stacked to form the boundaries of courtyards. This creates an atmosphere of tranquility and timeless beauty.

The Memorial Archways

Memorial archways are not only decorative structures, but also symbols of moral integrity, cultural pride, and historical legacy. Originally, there were eight memorial archways spanning the stone-paved streets of the town. Today, only three remain: two centenarian archways and one chastity archway. Among these, the Zhao Lilun Centenarian Archway (赵理伦百岁坊) is the most iconic and well-preserved. This magnificent stone structure was built in 1843 during the Qing Dynasty, measuring 9.5 meters in height and 9 meters in width, with a design featuring four pillars. The archway is adorned with four pairs of stone lions carved into the pillars. These lions appear to be descending from a high mountain, exuding a sense of dynamism and spirituality. The central horizontal plaque bears inscriptions by Emperor Daoguang himself. On the front side, it reads "七叶衍祥", meaning "Seven Generations of Blessings", while the back side is inscribed with "升平人瑞", meaning "Longevity in Peaceful Times".

Zhuangyuan Mansion (状元府)

Zhuangyuan Mansion is the former residence of Zhao Yijiong (赵以炯), the first Number One Scholar (状元) in the imperial examinations from Guizhou Province. The mansion is primarily constructed of wood, exuding a sense of grandeur. Covering an area of approximately 700 square meters, the mansion faces north and is designed as a two-courtyard quadrangle, featuring a main hall flanked by two side wings. Above the main gate hangs a simple yet meaningful couplet "琴鹤谱志,论语传家". Translated as "The zither and crane reflect one's aspirations; the Analects guide the family's legacy", this couplet encapsulates Zhao Yijiong's lifelong dedication to learning and moral integrity.

The North Gate

The North Gate, also known as Xuanwu Gate (玄武门), is the most elaborate and imposing among the town's four gates. Its roof consists of three layers of eaves, adorned with exquisite carvings of dragons and auspicious beasts.

Built during the Ming Dynasty, the North Gate was not only a site for receiving imperial decrees and conferring honors but also a central venue for important festivals and celebrations. From the Ming Dynasty to the present day, it has remained a focal point for major events in Qingyan Ancient Town. For the best views, ascend the gate tower to enjoy panoramic scenes of the bustling streets inside the town and the serene landscapes outside.

Ciyun Temple (慈云寺)

Originally built during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty and renovated in 1832 during the Daoguang era, the temple spans an area of nearly 2,000 square meters. The temple's structure has been well-preserved, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of the Qing Dynasty. Among its many treasures are the stone column bases, which are considered masterpieces of stone carving art in Guiyang. These intricately designed bases highlight the skill and artistry of the craftsmen of that era.

Wenchang Pavilion (文昌阁)

Wenchang Pavilion is a historic and cultural landmark in Qingyan Ancient Town. Built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, this brick-and-wood structure is nestled against a hillside, featuring a unique octagonal design with multiple eaves. In ancient times, the pavilion served as a gathering place for scholars who came to study, socialize, and pay homage to Wenchang Dijun (文昌帝君), the Taoist deity of literature and wisdom. It was a hub of intellectual activity and a symbol of the town's emphasis on education and culture.
