The beautiful Longji Rice Terraces, which is also called the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces and Longsheng Rice Terraces, is located in Longsheng County, Guilin City. Longsheng has a pleasant moist subtropical climate with plenty of sunlight and ample rainfall. A yearly average temperature in Longsheng is about 18.6 °C (65 °F). July and August are the hottest, with highest temperature of about 33 °C (91 °F). January is the coldest month, with the lowest temperature of about 5 °C (41 °F). The Precipitation here averages 1568 mm. The average rainy days per month varies from 11-21 days. The month with the highest number of rainy days is April (21 days). The month with the lowest number of rainy days is September (11 days).

Usually, the best time to visit Longsheng Rice Terraces is from late-April to mid-October. From late-April to mid-June, it's time to enjoy the mirror-like watery fields and labor life. From mid-June to mid-September, it's time for the magnificent view of green rice plants filling the terraces. From mid-September to mid-October, it is fall harvest time and the entire rice terraces area becomes a golden world.

Longsheng Seasons to Go

Longsheng has four distinctive seasons - warm and rainy spring, long and sultry summer, short and cool autumn, and cold and foggy winter.

Spring (March - May): Sunrise: about 6:00am
Sunset: about 18:50pm; Spring in Longsheng is from March to May, with a temperature ranges from 11-27 °C (52-80 °F). In spring, there rains moderately for 20 days a month. So rain gear is a necessity when visiting Longsheng in spring. Besides, you are advised to wear light layers for the daytime and some warm clothes for the evenings.; Seasonal Sceneries & Activities; Thanks to the great amount of rainfall in spring, the rice terraces in Longsheng are all decorated with shining water, which are just like pieces of mirrors scattered over the fields. To have a broad view of the mirror-like rice terraces, you are more suggested to visit Longsheng after late-April, because it takes a month or two for the terraces to be fully filled with water. Hiking, photography, local farmer's house visiting must be the top things to do in spring. Besides, on the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month, a local Kaigeng Festival (开耕节) will be held at the Ancient Zhuang Village Rice Terraces area, which symbolizes the beginning of farming. Summer (June - September): Sunrise: about 5:50-6:30am
Sunset: about 18:30-19:30pm; Summer in Longsheng is from June to September, with the temperature varies from 22-33 °C (71-91 °F). It is usually hot and sultry, but the beauty to be found outdoors is quite adequate compensation. Besides, there are two festivals in summer, one is the Shuyang Festival (梳秧节) held in Ping'an and the other is the most famous Red Clothes Festival (晒衣节) held in Jinkeng. Shuyang Festival (梳秧节). The Shuyang Festival is held on the six day of the sixth lunar mouths, while the Red Clothes Festival is held at the first week of June.; Umbrella, sunglasses and sun screen are suitable for this season, and you are more suggested to dress in layers to adapt the large temperature changes between the day and night.; Seasonal Sceneries & Activities; When the summer comes, the young plants flourish under the summer’s heat and spread from the foot to the top of the hill. And at about late-September, all the green rice plants gradually turn yellow, forming a golden sea around the mountain. You must be marvel at such a spectacular sight. Autumn (October - November): Sunrise: about 6:30-7:10am
Sunset: about 18:00-18:30pm; Autumn in Longsheng is really short, cool and changeable. It may rains heavily in the morning and be totally sunny in the afternoon. So remember to take an umbrella with you. Rain boots and raincoats are also recommended. There is no need to wear thick coat, but you are advised to pack with a light one, because it may a little bit cold when the night coming.; Seasonal Sceneries & Activities; Autumn is the peak season of Longsheng. People from home and abroad will rush into Longsheng to enjoy its curvaceous rice terraces, unique old buildings and charming ethic culture. The harvest work usually starts at the mid-October, thus the first half of October must be the perfect time to enjoy the “golden sea” made by rice terraces. Winter (December - February): Sunrise: about 6:25-7:30am
Sunset: about 18:40-17:50pm; In Longsheng, winter is from December to February. It is cold and dry with occasional snow. In the coldest January, the temperature can reach 5 °C (41 °F).; If you want to visit Longsheng in winter, you are advised to wear thermal underwear, woolen sweaters and down jacket to keep warm.; Seasonal Sceneries & Activities; A winter Longsheng Rice Terraces tour is not very recommended if there doesn't snow. It is too cold that there is nothing can be planted in the terraces. The scenery must be significant if it snows, but that rarely happens in Longsheng. Apart from the snow, another landscape in winter is the mirror-like watery terraces, which can be found at Ping'an Rice Terraces area and the no.1 viewpoint named the West Hill Music (西山韶乐) of Jinkeng. If you want to avoid the crowds of Longji, you can also pay a visit to Longji after the late-October.

Warm Tips of Your Longji Travel

1. In order not to miss the beautiful sunrise and sunset, you'd better arrive at your favorite viewpoint at least 10 minutes before that.

2. Sometimes, rains are far from enough to full fill the terraces, thus the locals will irrigate the terraces by themselves. During these years, the locals may irrigate the terraces immediately after the harvest in October, especially in Ping'an area. So you may also have a great view of the watery terraces before April, but that depends. You can contact us for the real-time information.

How to Plan a Longji Rice Terraces Tour

Longji Rice Terraces consists of three separate parts - Ping'an Rice Terraces, Jinkeng Rice Terraces and Longji Ancient Zhuang Rice Terraces (Longji Ancient Zhuang Village), with a same entrance. Ping'an Rice Terraces is the core and most popular scenic area, with the most convenient and modern facilities. Jinkeng Rice Terraces has the largest amount of terraces and the only cable car of the whole scenic spot. The Ancient Zhuang Rice Terraces is where Longji Rice Terraces started. Usually, a classic Longji one-day tour is going sightseeing at Nice Dragons and Five Tigers (九龙五虎) and Seven Star around the Moon (七星伴月) of Ping'an. If you have 2-3 days, you can visit Ping'an and Jinkeng together. And if you want an in-depth exploring tour of Longji, you can also pay a half-day or one-day tour to the Zhuang Rice Terraces.
