How to Get to & Around Longsheng Terraced Fields

Longji Rice Terraces in Longsheng, or called Longsheng Rice Terraces, is located in the mountainous area of Guilin that is not accessible by flights or trains. Travelers who want to visit Longsheng usually arrive at the downtown area of Guilin first and then change to the private cars or local buses (mini coaches) to Longsheng.

Get to / away from Longsheng

Longsheng Rice Terraces Scenic Area is about 13.5km away from the Longsheng County. And Longsheng County is farther away from the downtown Guilin than Longsheng Terraced Fields Scenic Area. Therefore, you are more suggested to visit Longsheng by private cars. If you travel from Guilin to the scenic area by private cars, you can go there directly without passing through the Longsheng County.

Guilin to Longsheng Bus

There are two kinds of buses traveling between Longsheng and Guilin. One is from Guilin to Longsheng County, and the other is from Guilin to Jinkeng area of Longsheng Rice Terraces. The former buses are more common, with frequent buses every day, while only about 2-4 the latter buses can be found every day.

The opening hours of local buses from Guilin to Longsheng lasts from about 6:10am-19:00pm every day. After about 1-1.5 hours’ journey, you will arrive at the county area where you can change to other local mini coaches to the rice terraces area. There are three main tourist areas in Longsheng Rice Terraces area, and the local buses can take you to different areas, so remember to know which one you want to go to before jumping on a bus. The buses from Longsheng County to the scenic area take about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. The time varies according to different areas you want to go.

From-to: Guilin Hong Kong Hotel / Guilin North Railway Station / Guilin West Railway Station - Jinkeng Rice Terraces

Guilin Hong Kong Hotel (桂林香江饭店), Guilin North Railway Station (桂林北站) and Guilin West Railway Station (桂林西站) have about 2 or 3 buses to Jinkeng Dazhai Parking Lot of Longsheng Rice Terraces. The departure time of those buses is changeable, but usually in the morning or early afternoon (about 8:30 - 13:00).

From-to: Yangshuo Bus Station - Guilin - Longsheng Rice Terraces

There is only about 1-2 direct buses traveling between Yangshuo and Jinkeng Rice Terraces Area, which depart at about 9:00am or 13:00pm. However, considering the long-time bus journey (about 4-5 hours or more) from Yangshuo to Longsheng directly, you are more recommended to go back to Guilin first and then travel to Longsheng from Guilin. Besides, if you are in Longsheng and want to travel from Longsheng to Yangshuo, you are also highly recommended to go back to Guilin first and then change to the leisurely Li River cruise to Yangshuo.

Get Around Longsheng Rice Terraces

There are also sightseeing buses and cable cars inside Longsheng Terraced Fields, but not in everywhere of the whole scenic area. You can find sightseeing buses in the Ancient Zhuang Rice Terraces and the Ping An Rice Terraces. And you can find cable cars in Jinkeng Rice Terraces. In the Ancient Zhuang Rice Terraces, the buses travel from the parking lot to the Visitor Center in Ancient Zhuang Village. In Ping'an Rice Terraces, the buses travel from the parking lot to the no.1 viewpoint “Nine Dragons and Five Tigers”. In Jinkeng Rice Terraces, the cable car travel from Dazhai Parking Lot to the no.3 viewpoint in Jinkeng named the “Golden Buddha Peak”.

No direct public transportations available to travel from one rice terraces area to another. So it may be a little difficult for your to travel from Ping An to Jinkeng, or from Ping An to the Ancient Zhuang Village. If you are a hiking enthusiast, you can travel from one rice terraces area to another by hiking. There are two popular hiking route among Longsheng Rice Terraces, one is from Ping An to the Ancient Zhuang Village, and the other is from Ping An to Jinkeng. Hiking along the former route takes about 1 hour, and along the latter route takes about 3-4 hours. You are more suggested to visit Longsheng by private cars if you want to visit two or more rice terraces areas there and you are not interested in hiking.

Warm Tips about Longsheng Transportation

1. You may need to change to a minibus to get into the rice terraces area at the entrance of Longji Area during some special period of time.

During peak season like the National Holiday (10.1-10.7), there may be traffic control in Longji Terraced Fields. Once there is such control, all the buses and coaches cannot get into the parking lot of each rice terraces area but should stop at the entrance of the whole Longji Terraced Field.

2. You are not suggested to arrange your Longji trip on your departure day.

Inside the Longji Area, there is a section of driving road that all the buses from/to Jinkeng and Ping'an should pass through, thus sometimes, especially during the holidays like the National Holiday (10.1-10.7) and the Holiday of Labors Day (days around May 1st), there may be a traffic jam. If you arrange your Longji trip on your departure day, you may miss your flight or train.

How to Plan a Longsheng Tour

Generally, you can spend about 2-5 days to visit the spectacular Longsheng Rice Terraces. If your time is in limited, you can spend about 2 days to visit the most popular Ping'an Rice Terrace, which is widely regarded as the most representative scenic area of Longji Rice Terraces. If you have more time, you are also highly recommended to spend about 2-3 days more to visit Jinkeng Rice Terraces and the Ancient Zhuang Rice Terraces. Jinkeng Rice Terraces is a rising hiking paragon of Longji Rice Terraces. Most of the wonderful pictures on the website are taken in Jinkeng. Longji Ancient Zhuang Rice Terraces is the birthplace of Longsheng Rice Terraces, so you can not only have a broad view of magnificent rice terraces, but also find a large amount of the most ancient local stilt-style wooden houses there.
