Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou)

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built in memory of Chinese nation’s father - Dr Sun Yat-sen. He made dauntless efforts for the future of China in the past and he led the war overthrowing the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) which was a “Dark Age” of China. Inside the Exhibition Room of Sun’s deeds, you could learn more about Sun Yat-sen. Meanwhile, you will have a better understanding of China’s history in the last century.

Covering an area of 6.3 hectares, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is located at the former site of Sun Yat-sen’ s office on the south slope of Yuexiu Hill. It is bigger than all other Sun Yat-sen memorial halls around the world.

In addition, its architectural design also attracts many tourists. It combines perfectly the architectural style of both China and western countries. You could see the main building of the hall was constructed in a traditional Chinese palace style with an octagonal shape from the outside. However, from the inside of it you can’t see even one pillar as traditional Chinese building.

In front of the main building you could see a bronze statue of Dr Sun Yat-sen, which vividly shows Sun’s countenance. At this place, you will also have a chance to appreciate the oldest bombax and the two biggest Michelia alba in Guangzhou.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen was the first leader of the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party of China) and the first provisional President of the Republic of China. He is referred as the "Father of the Nation" in the Republic of China due to his irreplaceable role in the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) during the Xinhai Revolution. Today he is still respected by many people both in China and some other countries like Singapore.

He was an outstanding patriot through his whole life and devoted to the future of China. Located at the northwestern corner of the main building is Sun Yat-sen Exhibition Room. In this room, you could learn about Sun’s work towards the liberation of Chinese people. Meanwhile, you will know how great this man is while reading the material about his whole life. After visiting this room, you will have a vivid understanding of why this man is respected as “China’s Founding Father”.

Appreciate the Architectural Style Combining both Chinese and Western Elements

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is a perfect model of combining both traditional Chinese architectural style and western architectural style. The main body of the hall is an octagon-shaped building which models old Chinese palace, featuring with double eaves, and gable and hip roof. The structure of the building, however, is steel truss and reinforced concrete. By this kind of structure, you couldn’t see any pillars inside the hall as other traditional Chinese buildings.

On the roof of the Hall are royal blue glazed tiles which were liked by Mr. Sun. Below the corner of eaves hang iron decorations. In the middle of the building hangs a horizontal inscribed tablet, written with four Chinese characters by Sun Yat-sen meaning Sun’s belief - “the whole world as one community” (天下为公).

Take a Photo with Sun Yat-sen’s Statue

The first sight once entering the gate is this bronze statue. It models what Sun looks when he gave speech in the Sun Yat-sen University. The statue is 5.5m high and has the weight of 3.9 tons. On the base of the statue is carved with Fundamentals of National Reconstruction written by Sun himself, which is his construction plan targeting the future of China.

Listen to Old Stories Told By the Distinguished Trees

As the flower of Guangzhou city, bombax can be seen around the whole city. However, you may not know, you could see the king of these trees in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. With over 300 years old, this oldest bombax in Guangzhou still blossoms today. If you go there during the early March, you could see its red flowers blossoming in the air.On two sides of the hall grow the biggest two Michelia albas of Guangzhou. The 2 trees are the same age as the hall. Every early summer or late October, the trees blossom with cute and white flowers and the hall is always gathered by many tourists.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is located at No. 259, Dongfeng Middle Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City (广州市越秀区东风中路259号). It is in the downtown area which is convenient to take subway, taxi or bus. You can take the metro line 2 to get off at the metro station of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and then walk about 5min to the memorial hall.It is about 35km from the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, and you could take taxi which will take about 50 minutes.
