Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province and once the imperial city of the Qing Dynasty, promised a tapestry of experiences unlike any other, From the serene tranquility of its royal parks to the vibrant energy of its bustling streets, every corner whispered tales of a past that echoes through the present. And as l set foot on this two-day adventure, l knew that l was about to embark on a memorable exploration of a city that seamlessly blends the best of both worlds.
Day 1: Looking back in History - Mukden Palace & Marshal Zhang Mansion
Upon our arrival in Shenyang by train, we went directly to Xiaoheyan, a famous morning market to feel the local lifestyle of northeastern China and try various special snacks, such as beef pies, wontons, and Doufu Nao (Tofu jelly).

After breakfast, we started to visit the most famous Mukden Palace, also called Shenyang Palace Museum or Shenyang Imperial Palace, a miniature Beijing Forbidden City with unique Manchu features. In history, it was the imperial palace of Houjin, which later became Qing - China's final imperial dynasty.

Walking through the imposing Gate of Heavenly Purity, l was like passing through the time tunnel, marveling at the intricate carvings, ornate decorations, and sprawling courtyards. The Chongzheng Hall, where emperors held court, stood tall and imposing, exuding an aura of unparalleled power and elegance.

Standing on a high platform, the Phoenix Building is mesmerizing with its ornate and delicate appearance. The building of Qingning Palace, is full of the architectural characteristics of the Manchu people. The dragon pattern multicolored glass inlaid in these palaces is lifelike, and the carved paintings are delicate and vivid. The palace complex, with its lush gardens and meticulously preserved pavilions, offered a fascinating glimpse into China's imperial heritage.

After a fulfilling morning steeped in history, l ventured to the nearby Zhang Zuolin's former Residence, also known as the Marshal Zhang Mansion. This sprawling estate, with its blend of Western and Chinese architectural styles, served as the power base for the influential warlord Zhang Zuolin (张作霖) during the early 20th century. Roaming through the beautifully landscaped gardens and opulent living quarters, l couldn't help but imagine the lavish lifestyle led by its former occupant. The museum within showcased artifacts and photographs, providing insight into a fascinating era of Chinese history.

As the sun began to set, l made my way to Shenyang Central Pedestrian Street (Shenyang Zhongjie), the heart of the city's bustling shopping district. The street buzzed with energy, lined with shops selling everything from traditional handicrafts to modern fashion. The aroma of street food filled the air, tempting me to indulge in a variety of local delicacies like sticky rice balls, sugar-coated haws, and ice cream. As l strolled along, taking in the lively atmosphere, l couldn't help but feel the unique blend of tradition and modernity that defines Shenyang.
Day 2: Feeling Profound Cultural Foundation - Beiling Park & Liaoning Provincial Museum
Awakening to a new day in Shenyang, l set out for Belling Park, a serene oasis amidst the city's hustle and bustle. The park, home to the mausoleum of the Qing Dynasty's founder, Emperor Nurhaci, offered a peaceful escape from the crowds. Walking along the tree-lined paths, l admired the intricate architecture of the tomb complexes, each telling a story of royal grandeur. The vast lakes and meticulously manicured gardens added to the tranquility, making it an ideal spot to reflect on the past and appreciate nature's beauty.
After a rejuvenating stroll at Beiling Park, l headed to Liaoning Provincial Museum, a treasure trove of artifacts and historical relics.

The moment l entered the museum's halls, l was awestruck by the sheer magnitude of its collections. From ancient pottery and jade carvings to exquisite paintings and calligraphy, each exhibit painted a vivid picture of China's rich history and cultural heritage. The most impressive collection is the Jade Pig Dragon. I spent hours wandering through the galleries, my eyes feasting on the intricate details and my mind absorbed in the stories they whispered.

In the evening, l ventured into the bustling streets of Shenyang, eager to experience the city's nightlife. My feet eventually led me to Xita Old Street, a vibrant area that encapsulates the essence of Shenyang's Korean heritage, The narrow lanes were lined with shops selling traditional Korean snacks, clothing, and souvenirs. Spicy kimchi pancakes, hearty bowls of bibimbap, Fried chicken in soy sauce and kimbap, every dish was a delightful surprise. The street vendors were friendly and eager to share their recipes and stories, making my mealtime conversations as enjoyable as the food itself.
