Historical Origin of Longmenhao Old Street

Longmenhao Old Street sits in Chongqing's Nanan District along the southern bank of the mighty Yangtze River. One of the most majestic “Eight Views of Ancient Bayu” - Longmen Haoyue (bright moon) is here. There was a dragon-like stone ridge along this stretch of the Yangtze River in Chongqing, with a gap in the middle that looked like a gate. The water inside the gap formed a small lake, which was called Hao in the local language. At night, when the moon's reflection shimmered on the Hao, it created a truly breathtaking sight. In 1056 AD, Su Shi, a celebrated poet, passed by this spot. Enchanted by the view, he inscribed the name “Longmen (dragon-like gate) Hao”, which was then carved on the high banks of the ferry, immortalizing the name. Ever since, numerous poets have been inspired to create their works here.

Longmenhao Old Street is one of the best-preserved and largest historical and cultural old streets in urban Chongqing, with 18 historical structures. Since 1891 when it became China's first inland trading port and numerous foreign merchants flocked to Chongqing, buildings mixing Western and traditional Ba-Yu architectural elements have been erected here, like the Former Chongqing Customs Office, the Sin Hua Trust and Savings Bank... During WWII, American, Italian, and Belgian embassy sites were also located here.

Today, alongside these antique gems, there are about 180 other old-style ones with elegant green tiles, old bricks, mottled walls, and ancient window frames. Moreover, the street houses nearly 30 artistic IPs with a wide array of art forms. You can find sculptures, murals, interactive art pieces, cutting-edge media displays, trendy national items... The new art elements coexist harmoniously with the old-style architecture.
