Chongqing Zoo - 4000+ Animals to See and Have Fun with including Pandas

There are herbivore animals of about 60 species such as adorable pandas, tall and strong elephants, amiable giraffes, active antelopes and so on, among which pandas are the most popular ones.

There are 22 giant pandas in Chongqing Zoo, which makes it the zoo with the largest number of giant pandas. Adorable giant pandas are the must-see animals in China. You can see witness giant pandas either climbing trees, playing with each other, rolling on the ground outside, lying flat, or feasting on bamboos..., both outdoor and in the enclosures. You'll able to witness two sets of popular twin pandas amiably called Sixiwanzi (namely Four-joy Meatballs) by Internet users sit around a table cheerfully feasting on bamboo shoots or fruits. Or take a look at another twin – elder gentle brother Yuke and naughty and smart sister Yuai and admire their comparatively different behaviors. Besides, go to see Mangxiaowu, a cute-looking panda, moving forward with its small waist and fruity booty. Besides giant pandas, there are red pandas as well.

If you are an intense panda-lover, don't miss Chengdu Panda Base, the sanctuary of more than 150 giant pandas and the world's only museum that focus entirely on giant pandas. It only takes you 1 hour to travel there from Chongqing.

Note: Panda House opens from 9:00 to 17:00 every day. Generally, you're advised to see pandas at 9:00 or 15:00 when they are eating and are active in playing and before 10:00 in hot summer. Since pandas are so loved by tourists, you're recommended to go here early to take up a better viewing position.

There are Monkey House, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey House and Orangutan House in this area. You can see squirrel monkeys jumping to and from trees with their long arms and tails and Hamadryas baboon whose faces range in color from red to tan to a dark brown, etc. You can admire Snub-nosed monkeys which are an endangered animal with most of them living in southern China are the most popular among tourists with their golden and long fur and cute small build as well.

Marvel at Beast of Prey Area

In Beast of Prey Area, you can meet captive and mighty bears, tigers, leopards and lions. Go to have a look at captive Bengal White Tigers and rare South China Tigers in the Tiger House to learn bravery, strength and determination to move ahead from them and promote your own energy in heart. Or see graceful and powerful big cats, leopards, brown bears and big African lions.

Integrate into Bird World

Bird Area consists of Raptorial Birds, Pheasants, Wading Birds, Climbing Birds, Swimming Birds, Birds Woods. You can see beautiful Indian peafowl, White Peacock, Flamingos, Black Swan, Red-crowned Cranes, etc. You're advised to pay a visit to Birds Woods, an open ecological-typed bird exhibition area, which breaks the traditional viewing pattern with birds being locked in a cage and provides a barrier-free environment for tourists to interact with them.

Take Awesome Pictures in Fish, Amphibian and Reptile Area

This area is located in the middle of the whole zoo. No matter what routes you choose, you'll be able to get close to fish, amphibians and reptiles.

If you are fond of taking brag-worthy photos, you should not miss Goldenfish House, which is made up of Viewing Gallery, Aquariums and Open-air Lotus Pond. You can see various fishes such as tropical fish either leisurely swimming away or even getting attracted to interact with you and take photos with fishes from Japanese, vintage, Hong Kong to film styles.

There are in total of 300 reptiles and amphibians with 25 species in Amphibian and Reptile House. If you are curious about baby's cries of giant salamanders, movement of rare and valuable crocodiles and snakes as well as lizards, you can walk into this area.

Panda Garden is the must-go place in Chongqing Zoo and since pandas are more active either early in the morning or at 16:00 in the afternoon, it's a good choice for tourists to enter from the gate and see cute pandas first. More conveniently, Panda Garden is located near the East Gate 2, which is easily accessible by Chongqing Light Rail Transit Line 2. Consequently, you're recommended to enter or exit through the East Gate 2.

Time-saving Route 1 (about 2 hrs)

If you only want to admire some representative animals in the zoo and also take some beautiful photos, you can choose to take this energy-saving route.

Route 1: Panda House → Goldenfish House → Amphibian and Reptile Area → Birds Woods → Penguin House → Monkey House → Tiger Mountain → Elephant House

Chongqing Zoo is 14 kilometers from Chaotianmen Dock and only 10 kilometers from downtown area so it's very convenient for tourists to travel here.

You can take Jiaochangkou-Yudong Light Rail Transit Line 2 (CRT 2) and get off at Chongqing Zoo Station (动物园站). Then walk for about 200 meters to enter through the East Gate 2. Or take CRT 2, get off at Yangjiaping Station (杨家坪站) and then walk for around 750 meters to East Gate 1. In this way you will start your trip from East Gate 1 and exit through Gate 2, which is also a good choice. If travelling in busy season, you take this way to enter the zoo more quickly.

Buses of various routes are available outside of the zoo as well and they will stop at Animal Zoo Station near East Gate 2. It's at your deposal to decide which transport to take.

Chongqing Zoo is far from Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport and Chongqing North Railway Station, for most tourists who want to travel to Chongqing Zoo, they will first go to attractions in Chongqing Downtown such as Hongya Cave , renowned for its enchanting, illuminated nighttime landscape, Three Gorges Museum , a comprehensive museum of history and arts of the splendid Three Gorges, etc. and since Chongqing Zoo is on the same rail transit line with Liziba Station, it's highly recommended that you travel to Liziba Station and then to Chongqing Zoo. The whole journey will last 1 to 2 days.

Also, you can spend another 1 to 2 days to marvel at the UNESCO World heritage sites - Dazu Rock Carvings and Wulong Karst Geopark at Chongqing suburb area.
