China 240-Hour Visa Free Transit Policy Ultimate Guide
Important news - On December 17, 2024, the National Immigration Administration of China announced an extension of the transit visa exemption stay for foreign nationals. The stay period has been extended from the original 72 or 144 hours to 240 hours (10 days). The policy also expands the number of eligible ports of entry, increasing from 39 to 60, and broadens the regions where travelers can stay, from 19 provinces to 24.
If you're planning to visit China as part of a multi-country trip, the newly updated 240-hour visa-free transit policy allows you to stay in China for up to 10 days without needing a visa. Here’s a guide on how to plan your trip to make the most of this exciting opportunity.
What is China 240-Hour Visa Free Transit Policy? - Citizens of 54 countries who hold an ordinary passport with at least 3 months of validity and an onward flight, train, or cruise ticket to a third country (or region) within 240 hours can transit in designated areas of 24 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China’s Mainland for up to 240 hours without a visa.
1. Check Eligibility - nationals from 54 countries eligible
The 240-hour visa-free stay applies to nationals from 54 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, and more. Confirm that your nationality is on the list of eligible countries.
2. Choose Your Ports of Entry - 60 ports
There are now 60 open ports of entry for the 240-hour visa-free policy across 24 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, including major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Xi’an. You can enter China via any of these ports without a visa, as long as you meet the requirements. Confirm that your entry/exit ports are on the list of eligible ports.
3. Onward Ticket to a Third Country or Region
You must provide proof of a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, with a departure date within 240 hours. All countries and regions outside China’s Mainland are considered third-party countries or regions, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, and others. Three eligible itinerary examples:
Los Angeles – Beijing – Shanghai – Hong Kong
Toronto – Tokyo – Shanghai – Bangkok
London – Hong Kong – Guilin – Chengdu - Singapore
4. Plan Your Stay Within the 240-Hour Window
The 240-hour period starts at 00:00 (GMT+8) on the second day after your entry. For example, if you arrive in China at 13:00 on April 20, 2025, your 240-hour period will begin at 00:00 on April 21, 2025. Once you arrive, you can stay in China for up to 240 hours (10 days), during which you can engage in tourism, business, visiting family or friends, or other activities.
5. Cross-Provincial Travel Is Allowed
With the new policy, you are allowed to travel across provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities within the permitted stay areas (see page 3~5). For example, you could fly into Beijing and then visit cities like Xi’an, Shanghai, or Chengdu, as long as your total stay does not exceed the 240-hour limit. Confirm that your destinations to visit are on the list of eligible provinces & cities.

Take high speed train Futian-Hong Kong or Ferry to Hong Kong, but buy ticket to Hong Kong in Shenzhen, won’t have proof on how I plan to get to Hong Kong
Have ticket from Hong Kong Back to the USA and can show proof on arrival to Beijing
Yes, your itinerary can apply for 240-hour visa free transit, but you have to show your ticket leaving Shenzhen. Maybe you can purchase a ferry ticket beforehand as proof to show in the airport.
Day 1: HK to Macau by ferry, do some sight seeing and then same day Macau to Nansha ferry to Guangzhou
Day 2-5 in Guangzhou
Day 6: Guangzhou high speed train back to Hong Kong
Is it possible to skip Macau? Like
HK to Nansha (or Shek Hou) by ferry to enter Guangzhou, and then Guangzhou high speed train back to Hong Kong
Thanks?
HK - Macau - Guangzhou - HK is qualified for 240-hour visa free transit. HK-Guangzhou-HK is not qualified.
Thanks
Your trips are not qualified for Shenzhen visa free policy. You could try to apply for visa on arrival from the ports between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
Hello! I am with a group of 5, does the following itinerary work:
Fly from Korea to Beijing
Train from Beijing to Xi'an
Train from Xi'An to Chongqing
Train from Chongqing to Zhangjiejie
Train from Zhangjiejie to Shanghai
Flight from Shanghai to Thailand
Looks like all trains stay within the designated 24 provinces, except maybe Zhangjiejie to Shanghai. First, these cross-province trains are 100% allowed under the new 240hr visa correct? Second, would the train from Zhangjiejie to Shanghai be okay, or do we need to fly?
Thank you so much!
Yes, you trip is eligible for 240-hour visa free transit.
Leaving Beijing to Japan on the 5th day.
My question is due to flying into Hong Kong, would I need to apply for a visa?
US-HK-Beijing-Japan is eligible for 240-hour visa free transit in China.
We are US citizen and would like to travel from HKG - Shanghai- HKG via High Speed Train. Do we qualify for the 240-Hour Visa free Transit? Thank you.
Hazel
Your itinerary is not qualified for 240-Hour Visa-free Transit. Taking a train from HK to Shanghai is not qualified. You can go like this: HK - Flight to Shanghai - Flight to Macau.
1. Feb 26 2025: LAX-USA to SGN-Vietnam
2. Mar 20 2025: SGN-Vietnam to PEK-China
3. Mar 31 2025: PEK-China to LAX-USA
Your itinerary is qualified for 10 days visa free transit.
We are having two layovers in Beijing on our trip from the UK to Japan, we have arranged it so we can spend some time in Beijing.
UK to Beijing Daxing (arrive 6th April)
Leave Beijing Capital International Airport on 8th April to go to Japan.
Leave Japan to Beijing Capital International Airport (arrive 18th April).
Leave Beijing Daxing for UK on 19th April.
We were planning on applying for the 72hr transit free visa twice, however the timings under the new 240hr transit free visa are making me a bit worried.
If we get the visa on 6th, it will be valid for 10 days from the 7th, making it expire on the 16th.
Are we then able to get another 240hr visa so soon (on the 18th when we arrive)? I cannot see any rules on how often you can apply.
Our inbound and outbound flights on both occasions are from 2 separate airports, so it's vital we have no issues or we won't be able to get our connecting flight.
Please help! Many thanks!
Your both trips are eligible for 240-hour visa free transit. There is no limitation on how often you can use the visa free policy. It's very important your airlines also are familiar with this policy.
Fly from Canada
5 days Hong Kong
Ferry to Shenzhen (Shekou Port)
2 days Shenzhen
High Speed Train (Futian) to Hong Kong
5 days Hong Kong
Fly back to Canada
I am gonna cross the border from Hong Kong to Shekou Port (Shenzhen) by ferry, and stay in Shenzhen for 2 days for sightseeing. Just wondering if I am able to exit at any of the Ports and Border Crossings (within Guangdong) to Hong Kong? I am thinking about taking the high speed train (Futian) back to Hong Kong. Does this route qualify for visa-free transit in china? (Canada-HK-Shenzhen-HK-Canada)
According to understanding of current policies, Shekou port can be used as entry, and Hong Kong West Kowloon Station can be used as exit port. Your trip seems to be eligible. But we haven't heard successfull cases yet.
There is no restriction on how you enter Hong Kong from Shenzhen. You can exit Shenzhen from many ports in Shenzhen by bus, train or cruise, but you need to show the ticket info when landing at Shenzhen.
Hello,
I would like to ask if it is possible to use the 240-Hour Visa Free Transit for this trip with a Czech passport?
1. by plane Prague-Beijing-Shenzhen (stay 9 days in Shenzhen)
2. speed train Shenzhen-Hong Kong
3. travel in Asia
4. after one month speed train Hong Kong to Shenzhen
5. same day by plane Shenzhen-Beijing-Prague
I was told at the visa center in Prague that this trip is not covered by the 240-Hour Visa Free Transit because I am flying to Shenzhen via Beijing. According to me, it is only a connecting flight, where I stay in the international area at the airport and go through the immigration office only in Shenzhen.
Thank you
Taking a train to Shenzhen from HK is not qualified for the visa free transit policy. However, cross-province travel between Shenzhen and Beijing is allowed currently.
London->Shanghai->Hongkong->Shanghai->London in 20 days
Can we apply for the 24 hour transit visa both time we enter China?
Yes, your itinerary is qualified for the visa free transit policy, but better spend some days in Hong Kong before using the visa free again.
Thank you
Yes, your itinerary is qualified for the visa free transit policy.
Travel by train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen is not eligible. You can take a flight or cruise to Shenzhen, then take a train out. You can apply for visa on arrival if you want to go to Shenzhen by land.
When I land in Shenzhen I would have an onward ticket from Hong Kong airport. Is that good enough for proof of onward travel or do I need a ticket that is leaving Shenzhen?
You also need to showcase a ticket leaving Shenzhen.
The 30-day visa free is not available for UK passports. You can use the 240-hour visa free transit instead.
Laos - Mohan Railway Station - 3 days in Xishuangbanna - Mohan Railway Station - Laos
thanks.
Your itinerary is not eligible for 10-day visa free transit. After Xishuangbanna, you need a ticket to another country or region, such as Singapore, HK, etc.
We are planning to visit China in June '25. Here is our planned itinerary: US (starting location) -> Tokyo, Japan (6 days) -> Seoul, South Korea (3 days) -> Xi'an, China (2 days) -> (cross province travel to) Beijing (5 days) -> Tokyo (layover 4 hours) -> US.
A couple of questions:
Can we enter China in one province (Xi'an) and exit from a different region/municipality (Beijing)?
We will be returning to the our home country US via Japan (4-hour layover) after our visit to China. Does this meet the third country requirement?
Cross-province travel is permitted under the current 240-hour visa free transit policy. Your itinerary is eligible for the policy. Congratulations!
Thank You
Paul
Under the current 240-hour visa free transit policy, cross-province travel is allowed. So your itinerary is eligible.
Hooe u can help
Yes, you can travel to Shanghai and Chengdu as well. You can travel like this - fly in from Chongqing, travel to Chengdu, then fly to Shanghai, then fly out China.
If you need a Chongqing Chengdu Shanghai tour, feel free to let us know.
Taking a train to GZ is not eligible for 240-hour visa free transit. In Guangdong province, only Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport/Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport/Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport/Nansha Port/Shekou Port can be used as entry port. Currently, there is no limitation on how many times you can use the visa-free transit policy.
I'm wondering if I can entering China twice visa free?
US - Hong Kong - Hangzhou 2days - Suzhou 2days - Shanghai 3days - Tokyo
Then back from Tokyo - Guangzhou 3days - Shenzhen 3days - Hong- Kong - US
Thanks in advance,
Yes you can use the visa free transit twice, but better not too often. The visa officer at the border decides whether you can get the visa-free entry. It's not 100 secured.

I will be travelling from Canada to Hong Kong, then Hong Kong to Chengdu/Chongqing for 8 days, then to Seoul, Korea. Do I still qualify for the 240 hour visa-free transit program if I am entering China from Hong Kong?
Thanks,
Yes, your itinerary is eligible for 240-Hour Visa Free Transit. Feel free to let us know if you need a worry-free Chengdu Chongqing visa-free tour package.

Thanks for your message. Yes, you can use the Transit Visa Free Policy twice in Shanghai. Feel free to find a great tailor-made Shanghai tour here if you want - https://www.chinadiscovery.com/shanghai-tours.html.
You can apply 24 hour transit visa free (direct transit) at Shanghai Pudong Airport, since you hold connecting flight ticket leaving and just transfer for a couple of hours. Thus, there is no need to apply for a full Chinese Visa. Also, border inspection procedures will be exempted if you stay inside the airport throughout the layover.
Enjoy your trip and have a good day ^o^
