How Far is Pingyao to Xian?
Pingyao Location: Well-known as one of the hot tourist places in Shanxi Province (山西省), Pingyao is a county located in central Shanxi Province. It is about 100 km from Taiyuan City and 100 km from Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, 400 km from Datong, 300 km from Wutaishan and 600 km from Beijing.
Xian Location: Xian is the capital of Shaanxi Province (陕西省) and a world famous tourist destination for its Terracotta Army. It lies in middle of Shaanxi Province, facing Wei River and Loess Plateau to the north, Qingling Mountains to the south. The distance from Xian to Beijing is around 1,100 km far, and almost 600 km to Taiyuan and 900 km to Datong.
Pingyao to Xian Distance: Shanxi Province borders Shaanxi Province in the east. Pingyao is located in the northeast of Xian, with an estimated driving distance of 500 km (over 6 hours’ driving).

Option 1: Travel from Pingyao to Xian by High Speed Bullet Train - Most Recommended

● Train Time: about 3 hours
● From & To: Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station (平遥古城站) - Xian North Railway Station (西安北站)
Located on the south section of Datong Xian High Speed Railway, Pingyao to Xian high speed train travel makes the transportation between the two destinations more convenient and efficient. Every day, there are about 10 high speed bullet trains running from Pingyao to Xian. The bullet train journey is just 3 hours short, which means you can arrival in Xian before noon if you take a morning train. The D trains depart from Pingyao Ancient City from about 8:30 to 20:00 each day and get to Xian on the same day. Most D trains have two kinds of tickets - First Class Seat and Second Class Seat, while a few D trains have more Business Class Seats offered.

◆ Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station 平遥古城站
Address: Wenjing Avenue, Houji Village, Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province 山西省晋中市平遥县侯冀村文景大道
Transportation: The Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station (also called Pingyao Gucheng Railway Station) lies farther to Pingyao Ancient City than Pingyao Railway Station. Driving distance to Pingyao Ancient City is about 9 km and just 3 km to Shuanglin Temple, almost 100 km (1.5 hours’ ride) from Taiyuan Wusu Airport (the nearest airport). Pingyao City Bus 108 is the special bus running in loop among two train stations in Pingyao, Pingyao Ancient City and Shuanglin Temple.
◆ Xian North Railway Station 西安北站
Address: Yuanshuo Road, Weiyang District, Xian City, Shaanxi Province 陕西省西安市未央区元朔路
Transportation: The station is located about 16 km from Bell Tower & Muslim Street (city center), 18 km away from south gate of Ancient City Wall, 50 km far from the Terracotta Warriors and 30 km to Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. After arrival, you can take Xian Metro Line 2 to get Bell Tower, of get of at Yongningmen Station (永宁门站) to visit the Ancient City Wall. Or, take Metro Line 4 to Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Tang Paradise. If you take a taxi, it needs 1.5 hours to the Terracotta Warriors Museum, 1 hour to Bell Tower (the best accommodation area in Xian) and 1 hour 20 minutes to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda.

Option 2: Travel from Pingyao to Xian by Normal Train - Not Recommended
● Frequency: 1 train per day (K train)
● Train Time: about 8.5 hours
● From & To: Pingyao Railway Station (平遥站) - Xian Railway Station (西安站)
At present, Pingyao still has 1 normal train getting to Xian each day. It starts from Pingyao Railway Station in Pingyao at 00:24 at midnight and reaches Xian Railway Station around 09:00 in the morning. You will pass 7 stations en route, including Huashan Mountain. Three types of tickets are sold: Soft Sleeper, Hard Sleeper and Hard Seat.
Compared to high speed trains, the only K train is not recommended, because the departure time is quite inconvenient for getting to the station, the train time is nearly 3 times than the bullet train and facilities on board is not as modern and advanced as that of the bullet train.
◆ Pingyao Railway Station 平遥站

Transportation: Pingyao Railway Station is located in the northwest corner of Pingyao Ancient City, within walking distance to the ancient site and just 10 minutes’ driving to Shuanglin Temple.
◆ Xian Railway Station 西安站
Address: No. 44 Huancheng North Road, Xincheng District, Xian City, Shaanxi Province 西安市新城区环城北路44号
Transportation: Xian Railway Station is an old train station located near the North Gate (Anyuan Gate) of Ancient City Wall. It is 37 km to Terracotta Warriors and Horses (about 1 hour’s driving), 4 km to Muslim Quarter (about 20 minutes’ driving), 10 km (30 minutes’ driving) to Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and 38 km to Xian Xianyang International Airport (about 1 hour’s driving). You can take bus 914, 915 from Sanfuwan Bus Station near Xian Railway Station to Terracotta Warriors, which takes nearly 2.5 hours in total.
Option 3: ravel from Pingyao to Xian by Flight via Taiyuan - Not Recommended
Currently, there is no airport located in Pingyao and the nearest airport of Pingyao is the Taiyuan Wusu International Airport (IATA: TYN). Taiyuan Airport lies about 100 km from Pingyao, with nearly 2 hours’ driving. Unfortunately, at present, Taiyuan has no non-stop flights to Xian, all flights have to stop in Yantai (Shandong Province) or Shijiazhuang (Hebei Province), costing at least 6.5 hours. So, taking flight from Pingyao to Xian via Taiyuan is not a good idea, due to many extra time-wasting transfers.
How to Plan a Pingyao Xian Tour
Best Time to Visit Xian: March to May, mid-September to November.
Top Attractions to Visit in Xian: Terracotta Warriors, Ancient City Wall, Bell & Drum Tower, Muslim Quarter, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, etc.
Usually, a classic Pingyao Xian tour takes four days, one and half a days to tour Pingyao, half a day to take the Pingxian to Xian high speed bullet train and leave 2 days to visit Xian. If you want an in-depth tour, more days should be prepared to visit more attractions and enjoy some local featured activities.
After arrival in Pingyao, you can use 1 full day to discover Pingyao Ancient City, climb up the Ancient City Wall to get a panoramic view of the entire, visit Rishengchang Former Bank to learn the history of modern bank in China, see busy commercial shops lined in Ming and Qing Dynasties Street, etc. Next day, take a few hours to visit Shuanglin Temple to witness the breathtaking “Treasure House of Painted Clay Sculpture of China”. Thousands of delicate Buddhist sculptures are preserved there.
Next, take a 3-hour high speed train journey to Xian. It’s flexible to arrange 1 day, 2 days, 3 or 4 days to visit Xian and surrounding attractions. It’s advised to use half a day to tour the Terracotta Warriors, spend 1 to 2 days for the Xian Ancient City Wall, Bell & Drum Tower, Muslim Quarter, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, local snack tasting and Tang Dynasty Show watching, etc. Making 1-day side trip to Mount Huashan is a thrilling trip where you can see marvelous landform and challenge the Plan Walk on the cliffside.
