Lhasa to Shigatse Trains: Schedule, Ticket & Fares 2024

Tourist often travel from Shigatse to Mount Everest during a Tibet trip, and Shigatse is about 275 km east of Lhasa. If you plan to visit Mount Everest, or Shigatse (Tashilhunpo Monastery, Sakya Monastery...) from Lhasa, there are two kinds of transportation you can choose from: by land drive or by train.

Lhasa to Shigatse by Train - Faster and More Convenient

Train Time: 2.5 hours ~ 3 hours

Train Time: 3 trains per day

The Lhasa-Shigatse Railway was put into operation on August 2014. From then on, it takes only 3 hours to travel from Lhasa to Shigatse. Recently, Tibet opens another new railroad - Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway which is rightly linked with the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway. Thus, there are faster Fuxing bullet trains running between Lhasa and Nyingchi, Shigatse, and between Shigatse and Nyingchi as well.

At present, there are 3 trains departing from Lhasa Railway Station to Shigatse Railway Station, including 2 Fuxing bullet trains and one normal speed train. With a speed of 160 km, the Fuxing train ride takes merely 2.5 hours.

Transportation: about 13 km, 30 minutes’ drive to downtown Lhasa; about 7 km, 20 minutes’ drive to Potala Palace; about 8 km, 25 minutes’ drive to Barkhor Street and Jokhang Temple; about 6 km, 15minutes’ drive to Norbulingka; about 13 km, 30 minutes’ drive to Sera Monastery; about 60 km, 1.5 hours’ to Ganden Monastery; about 172 km, 3 hours’ drive to Namsto Lake; about 52 km, 50 minutes’ drive to Lhasa Gonggar Airport.

Transportation: about 8 km, 20 minutes’ drive to downtown Shigatse; about 9 km, 20 minutes’ drive to Tashilhunpo Monastery; about 350 km, 7.5 hours’ drive to Mount Everest; about 160 km, 2 hours 40 minutes’ drive to Sakya Monastery.

Lhasa to Shigatse by Drive - Longer Time but Scenic Journey

Popular Driving Route: Lhasa - (110 km, 2.5hrs) - Yamdrok Lake - (86 km, 1hr 45mins) - Karola Glacier - (73 km, 1.5hrs) - Gyantse - (95 km, 1hr 50mins) - Shigatse

Driving is very popular among travelers, because on the driving way between Lhasa and Shigatse, you can pass by the beautiful Yamdrok Lake, Karola Galcier and make a short visit in Gyantse, explore “the City of Heroes” and visit the Gyantse Dzong, stunning Palcho Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum, etc. The drive takes a longer time but you have chance to enrich your Tibet travel and learn more history and culture about Tibet.

How to Plan Your Lhasa Shigatse Tour

With more flights and trains, Lhasa is usually used as the gateway to Tibet and the first station for a Tibet tour. Most travelers spend 2 to 3 days visiting the landmarks in Lhasa. On the arrival day, you’d better have a rest to acclimatize yourself to the high altitude. On the following days, you can take one day to visit the iconic Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street nearby, another day for the Norbulingka, Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery. If time allows, it’s highly suggested to visit the sacred and beautiful Namsto Lake.

When driving from Lhasa to Shigatse, you can visit the Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier en route and visit the Palcho Monastery in Gyantse, and spend one full day visiting the Tashilhunpo Monastery and Pala Manor in Shigatse. Most travelers will continue to visit Mount Everest with 2 more day, watch the amazing sunrise, sunset and stay overnight near the Mount Everest Base Camp.
