Haikou to Sanya: By High Speed Train, Car & Bus 2024

Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, is located on the northeast edge of Hainan Island, while Sanya, the superstar among worldwide visitors, is located on the southwest edge. The two cities are closely connected with each other by Hainan Ring High-Speed Railway, which runs along the coast of Hainan and helps visitors to make loop travel here. In addition to trains, visitors can also drive or ride a long-distance coach from Haikou to Sanya.

How Far is Haikou to Sanya? - Distance & Time-needed

Sanya is about 219 kilometers southwest of Haikou. The driving distance between them is about 303 kilometers. To go from Haikou to Sanya, bullet trains are the best choices (1.5~3.5 hours), followed by private car (4 hours around) and long distance coach (from 4 hours).

Top 1: Haikou to Sanya High Speed Trains

• Time-needed: 1.5~3.5 hours

The entire Hainan Ring High-Speed Railway is composed of its west section and east section, while the two sections both start from Haikou and end at Sanya. Each of Haikou and Sanya has 3 mainly-used high speed railway stations. On Haikou side, they are Haikou Railway Station, Haikou East Railway Station and Meilan Railway Station. On Sanya Side, they are Sanya Railway Station, Yalongwan Railway Station (Yalong Bay Railway Station) and Fenghuangjichang Railway Station (Sanya Phoenix Airport Railway Station). If you follow a bullet train along the west section, you will arrive at Fenghuangjichang Railway Station first, while Yalongwan Railway Station first if you go with the east section.

Haikou Railway Station

• Location: Yuehai Avenue, Xiuying District, Haikou City, Hainan Province, China (中国海南省海口市秀英区粤海大道)

Haikou Railway Station is the first train station in Haikou. Amongst all the bullet trains from Haikou to Sanya, this station shares the lowest percentage. However, there are still 10 bullet train around a day for you to choose.

Haikou East Railway Station

• Location: Fengxiangxi Road, Longhua District, Haikou City, Hainan Province, China (中国海南省海口市龙华区凤翔西路)

Haikou East Railway Station is located between Haikou Railway Station and Meilan Railway Station. It has the most frequent daily high speed trains to Sanya. More than half of bullet trains to Sanya depart from this station.

Meilan Railway Station

• Location: Meilanjichang Road, Meilan District, Haikou City, Hainnan Province, China (中国海南省海口市美兰区美兰机场路)

Meilan Railway Station is built on the same location of Haikou Meilan International Airport, with an underground passage between them. This station has about 90 daily high speed trains to Sanya.

Sanya Railway Station

• Location: No.10, Yuxiu Road, Jiyang District, Sanya City, Hainan Province, China (中国海南省三亚市吉阳区育秀路10号)

Sanya Railway Station is the most busy bullet railway station in Sanya. It has the most frequent bullet trains to/from Haikou. If you are going to stay overnight in Sanya downtown, you can get off your train at this station.

Yalongwan Railway Station (Yalong Bay Railway Station)

• Location: Intersection of Gaoxin Road and Tiandu Road, Jiyang District, Sanya city, Hainan Province, China (中国海南省三亚市吉阳区高新路与田独路交叉口)

Yalongwan Railway Station is the closest station to Yalong Bay, with a driving distance for about 10 kilometers (15~20 minutes by car). Also, it is the closest station to Haitang Bay, which is about 16.5 kilometers and half an hour east of the station by car. If you are going to Sanya by train and will stay overnight at one of the resorts or upscale hotels at the two bays, you are suggested to get off your train at Yalongwan Railway Station.

Fenghuangjichang Railway Station (Sanya Phoenix Airport Railway Station)

• Location: Jichang Road, Fenghuang Town, Sanya City, Hainan Province, China (中国海南省三亚市凤凰镇机场路)

Fenghuangjichang Railway Station is built facing Sanya Phoenix International Airport. It is close to the famous tourist site Tianya Haijiao Scenic Area on the west shore of Sanya Bay. Visitors who want to visit Tianya Haijiao after getting off the train are suggested to arrive at this station, or, Sanya Railway Station or Yalongwan Railway Station is more recommended.

Top 2: Haikou to Sanya by Private Car

• Time-needed: 4 hours around

Top 3: Haikou to Sanya by Long-distance Bus

• Time-needed: from 4 hours

In addition, there are long-distance buses available. Every day, Haikou East Bus Terminal has over ten buses running to Sanya Bus Terminal. Those buses are scheduled every an hour between 6:00am to 18:00pm. The bus ride takes at least 4 hours. Considering the language barrier and the hassle of finding the right bus terminals, this is not really a good choice. However, it is the most budget option.

How to Plan a Sanya Tour

Generally, a Sanya tour can be short or long, and many travelers choose to stay in Sanya for about 4~7 days. We suggest you visit at least one bay for a real "holiday", such as Yalong Bay, Sanya Bay, Dadonghai Bay or Haitang Bay where you can immerse yourself in the relaxing atmosphere by taking a sunbath, strolling on the soft beach, viewing the coastal scenery, etc. It is also available to spend several hours or more time experiencing some watersports. For travelers interested in the primitive nature of tropical forests, Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park or Yanoda Rainforest Park, which needs 0.5~1 day, is worthwhile. Besides, Nanshan Temple (0.5~1 day) with the world’s largest statue of Avalokitesvara - Nanhai Guanyin is also recommended if you have a Buddhist faith or want to appreciate a religious savory.
