Shanghai Kunming High Speed Railway & Train Map 2025

Shanghai Kunming High Speed Train, operated in late 2016, helps travelers travel between eastern and western China easily. Starting from modern city Shanghai, you can enter colorful Yunnan and explore the unique culture and folklore in 25 ethnic minority groups as well as the picturesque high plateau views. There are 4 high speed G-trains departing from Shanghai in the morning (07:22~ 11:15) and arriving in Kunming at night (19:25 ~ 23:06). These high speed trains take about 10.5 ~ 12 hours, saving more than 20 hours than normal trains. Only Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Kunming South Railway Station serve Shanghai Kunming High Speed Train. In addition to high speed trains, there are 3 normal trains connecting Shanghai South Railway Station and Kunming Railway Station. They take about 35.5 ~ 39 hours and they are not recommended for travelers.

Starting from Shanghai and ending in Kunming (capital of Yunnan Province), Shanghai Kunming High Speed Railway is China’s longest railway in east-west direction. The distance of Shanghai Kunming High Speed Railway reaches 2,252km (1,400 miles). It passes several capital cities, like Hangzhou, Nanchang, Changsha and Guiyang, etc. in 4 provinces (including Zhejiang, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou). Since most of the cities along the road are famed tourist destination with eyes-catching scenery, Shanghai Kunming High Speed Railway is praised as one of 8 Most Beautiful High Speed Railways in China. These high speed trains may take stop at Hangzhou East (杭州东), Nanchang West (南昌西), Changsha West (长沙西), Kaili South (凯里南), Guiyang North (贵阳北), etc.

It takes about 2 ~ 3 day to explore the highlights of Shanghai City, including the Bund, Shanghai Museum, Yuyuan Garden, Nanjing Road, etc. It is also recommended to pay a relaxing visit to Zhujiajiao Water Town. The journey on the train will take another day. In Kunming city, you can’t miss Stone Forest, Western Hill, Gragon Gate, etc. which take about 3 days.
