Nanjing in Jiangsu Province is an important railway hub connecting north China, east China and central China. It not only has frequent high speed trains to nearby cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, but also operates fast bullet trains to cities like Beijing, Wuhan, and Huangshan.
For tourists who are going to or leaving Nanjing, the main railway stations they choose are Nanjing South Railway Station and Nanjing Railway Station. Railway Stations in Nanjing
There are a dozen of railway stations in Nanjing, including Nanjing Railway Station, Nanjing South Railway Station, Nanjing North Railway Station (under planning), Xianlin Railway Station, Jiangning Railway Station, Lishui Railway Station, etc. The first two are most chosen ones and both have convenient transportation connecting them with downtown. Nanjing Railway Station is the oldest railway station in Nanjing and serves both normal trains and some high speed trains, while Nanjing South Railway Station serves high speed trains only and it has more schedules of high speed trains.
Note: Nanjing Railway Station and Nanjing South Railway Station are about 15 km (30 minutes' drive) away. So extra attention should be paid when buying your train ticket and make sure you choose the correct one.

Nanjing South Railway Station - High Speed Trains

Nanjing South Railway Station, or Nanjingnan Railway Station is an important part of Nanjing railway system. It’s the largest transportation hub in East China and the largest high-speed railway station in Asia. All trains passing here are high speed trains and it mainly serves Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Nanjing-Hangzhou High-speed Railway, Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway, etc. You can transfer between most cities in China and here by high speed train. Metro Line 1, Line 3, Line S1 and Line S3 all pass Nanjing South Railway Station.
- To Nanjing downtown (Xinjiekou): about 11 km, 40 minutes by car or metro.
- To Confucius Temple & Qinhuai River: about 9 km, 25 minutes by car or metro.
- To the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders: about 14 km, 30 minutes by car, 40 minutes by metro.
- To Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum: about 14 km, 45 minutes by car, 1.5 hours by metro and bus.
- To Nanjing Lukou International Airport: about 33 km, 30 minutes by car, 1 hour by metro.
Luggage Storage: Nanjing South Railway Station provides luggage storage lockers in the waiting room where you can enter with a train ticket. The fee is about CNY 3-5 for 12 hours. If you do not have a ticket, you can put your luggage in the shops nearby and the shop owners will charge you about CNY 20.

Nanjing Railway Station built in 1905 has served Nanjing people for over 110 years. It is just behind the beautiful Xuanwu Lake and is one of the most beautiful railway stations in China. It now mainly serves normal trains across China and some high speed trains in or near Jiangsu Province on Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Nanjing-Wuhu Railway, Nanjing-Xi'an Railway, and Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway. Metro Line 1 and Line 3 can get you there conveniently.

How to Plan Your Travel in Nanjing
How to Get to Nanjing: You can easily get to Nanjing by high speed train from Beijing (about 3-5h), Shanghai (about 1-2.5h), Hangzhou (about 1.5-5.5h), Suzhou (about 45min-2.5h), etc. and flight from Beijing (2h), Guangzhou (2h15min), Chengdu (2.5h), Xian (2h), etc.
Best Time to Visit Nanjing: March to June and September to November, especially in late October and early November.
