As a westernmost frontier city in Southern Xinjiang with profound historical and cultural ambience, Kashgar is accessible by train as well, apart from the fast air travel. Currently, there are some normal speed trains running to Kashgar from Urumqi, other places in Xinjiang and a few cities in western China, such as Xian, Chengdu and Lanzhou. High speed bullet train service is not available. Kashgar Railway Station is the one and only train station handling the trains to and off Kashgar. Where to take a train to Kashagr?

At present, Kashgar is linked by two railways in Xinjiang - the Southern Xinjiang Railway and Kashgar-Hotan Railway. The Southern Xinjiang Railway (Nanjiang Railway 南疆铁路) starts from Turpan, stretches along the south of Tianshan Mountains and north of Tarim Basion, passes by Korla (库尔勒), Kuqa (库车), Aksu (阿克苏), Artux (阿图什) and ultimately stops in Kashgar. Kashgar-Hotan Railway is constructed between Kashgar and Hotan along the Taklamakan Desert via Shache and Yecheng. It is a segment of the planned Xinjiang-Tibet Railway. Besides, through combined railway, Urumqi, Yining (Ili), Xian, Tianshui, Lanzhou, Chengdu and some other places also have trains to Kashgar.

Kashgar is not very big and the major attractions are mostly located in the downtown area. So, it’s easy to transfer to downtown and visit the landmarks. If you plan to visit Tashkorgan and Karakul Lake, taking our private car is the best way to go.

● Kashgar Railway Station to Downtown Kashgar: about 6 km, 20 minutes by driving; 45 minutes ~ 1 hour by city bus.

● Kashgar Railway Station to Kashgar Old Town: about 7 km, 25 minutes by driving; 50 minutes ~ 1 hour by bus.

● Kashgar Railway Station to Id Kah Mosque: about 6 km, 25 minutes’ drive; 45 minutes ~ 1 hour by city bus.

● Kashgar Railway Station to Abakh Hoja Tomb: about 3 km, 15 minutes by driving; 40 minutes ~ 50 minutes by bus.

● Kashgar Railway Station to Kashgar Bazaar (Sunday Livestock Market): about 5 km, 20 minutes by driving; 40 minutes ~ 1 hour by city bus.

● Kashgar Railway Station to Shipton’s Arch: about 66 km, 1.5 hours’ drive.

● Kashgar Railway Station to Kashgar Airport: about 7 km, 15 minutes by driving; 1.5 hours by bus.

How to Plan A Kashgar Xinjiang Tour

How to Get to Kashgar: From mainland cities - you can take domestic flights from Beijing (about 6~7 hours), Xian (about 4 hours), Chengdu (about 6~7 hours), Shanghai (about 8 hours), Guangzhou (about 8 hours), Jinan (about 7 hours), Zhengzhou (about 7 hours), etc., or provincial flights from Urumqi (about 2 hours), Korla (about 1.5 hours), Yili (about 1.5 hours). From the borders - you can also get to Kashgar from land border ports, such as Kalasu Port, Irkeshtam Port, Torugart Port, Khunjerab Port. If you need transfer, we can send a tour guide and driver to pick up you from the borders.

Best Time to Visit Kashgar: suitable for travelling all year around, but May to October is most comfortable and beautiful.

Top Places to Visit Kashgar: Kashgar Old City, Karakul Lake, Tashkurgan (Stone City, Golden Grassland), Id Kah Mosque, Kashgar Bazaar

Plus arrival and departure days, you’d better plan at least 4 days for your Kashgar trip. If you want to extend your trip to Tashkurgan, you need at least 5 days. You can spend 2 days exploring attractions in Kashgar city and its old town, such as Kashgar Bazaar, Kashgar Old City, Id Kah Mosque, Abakh Hoja Tomb, Ancient Tea House, etc., then have a day trip to Karakul Lake from Kashgar. If you want to experience something more authentic, Tashkurgan, about 3.5 hours’ drive from Kashgar, is strongly recommended.
