China is available for traveling all year around, but the best months for most parts of China are March, April, May, June, September, October and November. January and February are best for winter snow and ice holidays.

You'd better avoid traveling to China during public Chinese holidays. Most attractions and hotels are full, and you have to wait in a long queue to enter and check in. Secondly, all transportations including private cars, high-speed rail, airplanes, etc., will become very congested and difficult to book tickets. The prices of hotels, transportation, etc. will often increase, and travel expenses during this period will be more expensive than usual. Check China Public Holiday 2025 Schedule

In general, China weather features a distinct continental monsoon climate, characterized by cold winter, hot summer, mild spring and autumn. However, the actual weather differs from region to region by different temperature zones according to the diverse landforms, longitudes and latitudes, and elevations. Two different destinations may have totally different temperatures and climates in the same time. For example, it may be snowy in some high-altitude regions in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Tibet and Sichuan in May while in Guangzhou it usually starts getting hot. Thus, it is important to require advice from your travel consultant, then pack and wear accordingly.

Wear for Seasons. Opt for durable, easily washable, and breathable cotton garments. During the winter months (Dec., Jan., and Feb.), much of China, particularly the northern parts, tends to be chilly. Layering is advisable during this period. If your travels coincide with the rainy season (May, Jun., Jul., and Aug.), it's prudent to carry a light raincoat. Sunscreen is essential for the summer months (Jun., Jul., Aug.), and an umbrella serves as a versatile shield against both sun and rain. In much of China, spring (Mar., Apr., May) and autumn (Sept., Oct., Nov.) are typically mild, with significant day-to-night temperature variations. Packing lightweight items that can be layered up and stripped off, and a warm jacket is recommended. For comfortable exploration, we highly recommend bringing a quality pair of walking shoes alongside stylish flats.

1. Baidu Maps; 2. WeChat (social media messaging and chatting, digital payment); 3. Ali-Pay for daily cash-free payment; 4. Pleco or Waygo for translation; 5. Metro Man, China; 6. Didi Chuxing for grabbing taxi.

Credit and debit cards may not cover all your expenses in China. With the widespread popularity of digital payments, many businesses no longer offer point-of-sale (POS) systems for credit and debit card users. However, you can still use your bank cards via POS systems at selected hotels, shopping malls, and larger restaurants.

Cash is still widely accepted. It is also very reliable. You’d better always bring some cash with you, including some small changes.

Digital payment is the norm in China, with Alipay and WeChat Pay leading the way. Since July 2023, they've started accepting international cards through their apps, though success may vary depending on the user's country and bank.

To keep using your telephone during your China vacation, you can activate international roaming before departure, or buy a new local SIM Card after arriving in China. China SIM Card could be bought online, or at the arrival hall of international airport, or from the local offices of TELCO providers - China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. Some hotels also provide international direct dialing.

Free Wi-Fi can be found in most hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, cafeterias, tea houses, etc.

Upon your arrival in China, you will need to complete the Arrival Card and hand it over to the immigration officer. The officer will keep your Arrival Card and you will keep the Departure Card until you leave the country.

If you haven’t brought anything which needs to be declared, choose the “Nothing to Declare Channel” (Green Channel), and if you have anything needed to be declared to the customs with you, choose the “Goods to Declare Channel”(Red Channel). Personal items such as cameras and computers do not need to be declared if they will return home with you. Items that will be left in China may be required to be declared.

The list of items that are prohibited from importing into China is similar to that of most countries, including: arms and explosives, counterfeit currency, offensive printed material, poisons, illegal drugs, animal and plant products, and foodstuffs.
