Except for the national holiday (Oct 1. to 7) and weekends, you can enjoy the crowd-free and amazing Beijing scenery for the most of your time: the dazzling maple leaves and golden gingko trees with ancient royal buildings dated back to thousands of years ago such as Summer Palace and the Forbidden City, also the man-made wonder, different sections of the Great walls.
You can start from Tiananmen Square which is a landmark site of Beijing and also right next to the forbidden city. The gingko trees have already turned bright and golden in autumn with the magnificent palaces, various doorways, yellow-glazed roofs and red walls, and the whole site is quite stunning. In the outskirts of Beijing, the sweet-scented osmanthus is blooming in the Summer Palace, the largest and best-preserved royal garden in China. Ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and corridors look more warm-toned in the backdrop of red maple leaves and yellow reeds around Kunming lake.
To enjoy the fall foliage in October, you can not miss the Fragrant Hill Park (Pinyin: Xiangshan Gongyuan 香山公园) and Pofeng Ridge (Pinyin: Pofengling 坡峰岭) where miles of woods are clothed in reddish or scarlet. Forest parks with ancient temples are worthwhile sites to visit in autumn.
